Hello and thank you for the nice welcoming (is that a word - welcoming?).

How come so many of you speak german?

Quote:Immer suchen ich Nachkriegszeit Deutsche Romane das rede nicht uber Hitler

If I understand you cerrectly you are looking for german novels, which are not about Hitler or anything like that?
Ever read Max Frisch? I'd recommend "Homo Faber".

The thing is that the vast majority of German novels published after 1945 that seem to be in print in America seem to be focused on the Nazi era and its consequences (stuff like Heinrich Boll, Gunther Grass, Bernhard Schlinck, &c). It's kind of odd that Hitler seems to be regarded as the big elephant in the room, but, if its artists are any indication, the only thing anyone seems to want to talk about. I haven't read Max Frisch but I probably will when I can find his books.

By the way, your English is pretty good. Your spelling leaves much to be desired, though. Hopefully, it will improve.

Ich habe deise Sprache vier Jahre im Gynasium studiert. Es ist die Sprache meine Vorvatern.

What I hope I just said: I have studied this language for four years in High School. It's the language of my ancestors.

Well, some of them anyway. I'm also part Scottish and a few other British groups but the English-speaking part I have down fairly well.

It's been over 25 years since I studied this language so there's so much I've forgotten. If I really made a study of it, I could be fluent again, I think. I actually had the experience so few of my fellow Americans do of being able to actually think in the foreign language (as opposed to the cumbersome process of hear what's said, translate to English, think of response, translate to other language).

Frisch is actually from switzerland. But he always wrote in german.
A book most people like is "Das Parfum" by Patrick Süskind. Maybe you already know it or have heard of it.

Yes, Berlin is a godless city.

There's a nice joke about it (I hope I can tell it in english):
A Berlin family is moving to bavaria (very catholic). Their youngest son, let's call him Fritz, comes to the bavarian school and after the first week on friday afternoon the teacher says "okay, now close to the weekend, let's slow down a bit and play a little game." He goes to Fritz. "Fritz quick, what is that: It collects nuts, jumps from tree to tree and has a bushy tail?!" Fritz answers:"Well, I'd say it's a squirrel, but after this week I guess you're talking about the virgin mary again."

Ich habe seit etwa 3 Jahre die Sprache studiert. Meine Familie ist auch aus Deutschland, ausdrücklich aus Hesse, woher wir hier im Amerikanischer Unabhängigkeitskrieg gekommen sind.

There are a few different places and circumstances by which my various ancestors came to America but most of them were war refugees and draft dodgers. Some were from Prussia who fled the Seven Years War (father's side). Others were from Alsace-Lorraine (mother's side) and so I have some French blood in me as well. It depends on how you count the nationality of the people from that area, since the province traded hands around that time. My Scottish ancestry (father's side) has a similar story.
