If I understand you cerrectly you are looking for german novels, which are not about Hitler or anything like that?
Ever read Max Frisch? I'd recommend "Homo Faber".

It's adress ist atheisten.org
I'm there under the same Name, but I'm also quite new there, so I can't introduce you well.
I lived in Germany for some time. Due to mother's line of work, the central bank of Turkey had sent us there.

Berlin response (my native-Berlin German teacher taught me): Wenn du ihn siest. (when you see him)
It's like saying hello in some parts of Germany. But I guess you know of it already.

As do the Prussians but that doesn't stop them from mocking the Austrio-Bavarians when the term is used. The full context of the joke is when a Bavarian greets a Prussian.

Bavarian: "Gruss Gott" (Greetings to God)
Prussian: "Wenn du ihn siest." (when you see him)

From what I gather, there's kind of a cultural divide between north and south Germans, I suppose not unlike how there is in America. The Oktoberfest/laderhosen stuff is more associated with the Austrian, Bavarian, German-Swiss culture and you won't find Berliners who identify with it, any more than you'll find many cowboys in New York or Chicago, though that image of Americans seems to be commonly found in foreign countries.

That's true. But also in Bavaria not many people wear "Lederhosen". It's actually a good way to identify tourists. They're the ones with the Lederhosen. Austrians, as bavarians, will insist, that there is a sharp difference between Austria and Germany (Switzerland is neutral, of course).
