Of course it is,just like being a Christian.--not at all to do with arrogance and bad manners.

Quote: (Dotard) As I always am highly interested to see what can possibly turn an Atheist -> Christian.

Oh me too; that's right on my list, just under eating my own scrotum.

Quote:I was an atheist until my mid-twenties, so I do know a thing or two about atheism.

Really? be fascinated to learn from you. All I know about atheism is that it's the lack of beliefs in gods. Have I missed something? Was there a memo changing the meaning of the term?

Quote:Most people do not respond very well to insulting tones and belittling remarks. But me, I don't respond at all.

As you can see,I DO respond, usually just once, I don't usually engage in flame wars. However,I don't suffer fools,so judging from your first post I doubt I'll have a lot to say to you.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I just live to be patronised by theist apologists.

I especially enjoyed the facile and moralistic view of Nihilism.I can't wait for a demonstration of mastery of Socratic method. Perhaps first have a glance at some of the more common logical fallacies,EG "Argument from authority". The claim of knowing about atheism by virtue of having been one, followed by a demonstration of the opposite.

Hey guys,

Hello and welcome Arcanus. I am quite happy to see your arrival. I don't know if it's fair, but there are a few theists here that hang around for a good argument. I suppose your entrance is similar to mine, and you make the same point I did about the futility of discussing theism with atheists. They won't stop picking though. I said again and again and again that I could not show them evidence because it is all interpretive, all relative... But they like to say 'AHA!' and think they have won some point. I'm sure you're aware.

I also try to speak like a philosopher, and a poet to boot. My grammer is not perfect, I read a lot of Saramago. I was charmed by the name of this thread. I like the mixed reference, I can only respond that here people outgabe themselves all of the time.

I am looking forward (and i mean that, I am not petty) to hearing about what you have found out. Welcome again, and thank you for sharing.

Hey Padraic. I really kind of like you, so please don't think I am being too harsh. I just feel, as I do often with the world, that I need to state my opinion of your behavior. I know it's worthless, but it seems important. It seems like you felt personally patronized by Arcanus' post, and so personally patronized him. I don't see why you can patronize someone for them for making you feel such and be on any kind of higher ground than said 'apologists'. Just a little thing though.

Thanks all,

Well, as Tiberius noted, it would be insulting only to mimsy atheists. Since I didn't specify anyone here—how could I, being new?—a person would have to self-identify with the term in order to be offended by it. Surely you would agree there are mimsy atheists, just as I would agree there are pathetic Christians. It would be difficult (putting it lightly) to deny they both exist.

I vote for the "paranoid" option, since it was nothing so nefarious but rather just my attempt at crafting a unique and creative subject line that stood out, instead of a common and mundane "Hello" or "I'm new here" and such. Although I love the fact that you even knew what "mimsy" meant in the first place, it's unfortunate you chose to identify with it.

I'm greatly looking forward to the unleashing of your logical justifications.

A pleasure to make your acquaintance. I don't know how much "unleashing" there will be, but I will definitely contribute in conversations that fall within my areas of interest when I find them. I'm not here to post a broad evangelization campaign; that is to say, I'm not here to unleash logical justifications that hopefully convert atheists. I leave people to believe whatever they want to believe. Some Christians feel a pressing mandate to evangelize everywhere all the time. I don't. There is absolutely nothing I can say about the gospel and salvation that people here don't already know, right? It would be a waste of my time and theirs.

I will engage someone in that sort of conversation only if they show a genuine interest and ask me, and only in private since such a conversation by its very content is not for public spectacle. Otherwise, I will assume that people here are content with their worldview, whether atheistic or something else.

Me neither, quite frankly.

Hmm. Yeah, I'll get right on that.

Hopefully there are others here on this forum who understand that it's not uncommon for Christians to demonstrate an exceptionally poor understanding of atheism. Judging by the insight Tiberius displayed over the "mimsy" thing, I suspect he understood my comment.

I love the confidence of your assumption Wink

But, yes, a very original title and I can assure you, as only I can, that I did not take it as an insult and I look forward to you explaining what all this Christianity stuff is all about in nice, easy to understand chunks rather than blasting us with huge quotes from the bible, as so many seem to do.

You did originally state that you didn't want to be classified as any particular brand of Christian but it would be nice to know where you stand on some of the key issues that atheists seem to have the most problems with.

For example, Genesis, The Ark, Original Sin, Virgin Birth, The Resurrection etc. etc.

And of course, welcome once again.

Well yes, once you've admitted your position is based on essentially nothing, you lose all credibility. This is why most theists don't do it. No offence meant to you, but theists who admit their belief is based on nothing don't actually bother me, because they tend to be of the "moderate" variety and they don't actually harm anyone. I'd much rather see a load of fundies here (not that you aren't welcome).

I'll add:

Evolution, Big Bang, Age of the Earth to those.

I dunno, maybe because we want to know where you are coming from? Perhaps because there are so many different types of theist out there, we want to know exactly how much you know, or what category you fit into. For example, are you a creationist or do you accept evolution; these are important questions.

Why?

Why not?

Are you embarrassed?

Or are you aware that your views will affect a negative attitude on an atheist forum?

Perhaps you're only here to impose your views upon us and don't wish to engage in any form of exchange.

Or maybe you think that as you are a Christian and we are merely atheists you hold some sort of moral superiority over us and, how dare we ask such a question.

Come on, your a theist and we find you fascinating and intriguing and want know how you tick! Don't say you're not going to play Huh

AA already said why not Darwinian. Why not let him/ her participate in topical debate rather than having the stoning here. It's messy for the forum, and so dull when on any forum everyone can't contain their excitement.
