On the topic of the original post: if aliens is to be the explanation for the actions of people here on earth, wouldn't the actions of those aliens themselves have to be explained in terms of prior aliens? If not, why do we need their influence to explain our own actions as a species? An infinite regress of external causes isn't much of an explanation.
