In the UK, even the christians generally oppose blasphemy laws. The thinking is that God's perfectly capable of dealing with blasphemers himself.

If you ask me, the story stinks to high heaven. I'm not saying that it couldn't be true, nor defending the actions of the government.
However, I find it really hard to believe that people would actually find a mentally disabled girl that conveniantly carries torn down pages of the Koran in a waste bag. And since it was stated that the girl was from a christan family, I'd suppose that it's more believable if she had pages from the bible in that waste bag, unless someone gave her a copy of the Koran, told her to tear pages of it, and place them in trash, walk around, and be spotted by moslems, and then get arrested.
