Religious Tolerance

RE: Religious Tolerance
I am a true believer in Scottish whisky but tolerant, and even accepting, of others who prefer Irish, US, Canadian or other forms of the blond nectar. However, I would be most reluctant to pontificate upon their perceived differences in a forum dedicated to discussion of the benefits of being entirely teetotal. An a-drinker is unlikely to be too interested in such hair-splitting. Neil

If people want to be racist then that is a separate issue all together. It's also still their right to be racist under freedom of speech. Everyone else also has the freedom of speech to call them twats for being racist.

Isn't freedom of speech wonderful? Tongue

Well said mate , but actually in England its not your right to be racist under the freedom of speech , quite the opposite actually . What you say can land you in quite a spot of bother with the law.
Religion is fair game though.

Yeah, true. I have seen a few cases where people have been handed sentences for 'racism'. Personally I think it's ridiculous and a violation of human rights.

If people want to be assholes it's their right to do so.

I agree , getting in trouble witht the law for something that is essentially just words dosn't quite sit right with me (and could set a dangerous precedent , however well meaning) . But you do have to draw a line with freedom of speech somewhere ? and i guess actually insulting someone to their face based on thier race/colour is where they draw it.
This reminds me of that case in Russia recently , of that all -girl punk band jailed for “the insult and humiliation of the Christian faith and inciting religious hatred.” This was an outrage and very worrying.

The line is simply wherever freedom of speech crosses into the realm of abuse.

It shouldn't be illegal to hold racist views, but if you are going to abuse someone because of those views then you're out of line.

Quote:What are you feelings on religious tolerance
I am a supporter of religious tolerance. Our ancestors were quite liberal in terms of religion, even though most of our kindred are moslems today, in the days of our glorious empires, we have supported religious freedom in every way.

From the Yasa of Chingiss Khan:
"He ordered that all religions were to be respected and that no preference was to be shown to any of them."

"Chingis-Khan did not belong to any religion and did not follow any creed, he avoided fanaticism and did not prefer one faith to the other or put the ones above the others. On the contrary, he used to hold in esteem beloved and respected sages and hermits of every tribe, considering this a procedure to please God."

"Chingis Khan decided that no taxes or duties should be imposed upon fakirs, religious devotees, lawyers, physicians, scholars, people who devote themselves to prayer and asceticism, muezzins and those who wash the bodies of the dead. "

In his memory, and due to personal convictions, I hold religious tolerance and freedom in high regard.

Quote:Religious tolerance is quite easy (it just calls for acting like a human being), but accepting beliefs you don't hold to be true is too much to ask.
Well, no one is asking you to do so. You do not interfere with it, however, for that would equal the obstruction of religious freedom.
Other than that, you may worship your religion as you wish, and worship any god you would like. It does not mean that you have to accept Gods of another religion.

I discovered, in an argument today, that it is a violation of a Christian's freedom of religion to prevent them from forcing their morals on everybody.

When one has the freedom of speech, one also has the responsibility of respect, that is if one wants to be acceptable to the majority.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.
