Thoughts on homeschooling?

I'll stay away from the Star Trek love-fest...
I think home schooling is okay. We moved out of DC so our kids could go to the local public schools. If I were different I might have elected to stay in DC and homeschool though.
My big issue with homeschooling is I've seen some parents with atrocious spelling/grammar issues that homeschool. I just don't see how an adult that can't write well can teach their children to write well. This, of course, extrapolates to other subjects as well. But if the parent/s are competent in general studies (perhaps an exam to prove they aren't imbeciles?) then whatever they want to teach their kids is fine by me.

I'd agree. Luckily, both of my parents happen to be college educated (despite their fundamentalism) and they were professional teachers before I was born.

I think a good secondary education require more subject competence in a host of fields than most adults would retain into adulthood. So whoever tries to home school should consider what more professional resource can be bring to bear than they themselves.

Most homeschoolers nowadays undergo standardized testing and coordinate with a local school. I don't remember all the details and it's different in each state.

Homeschooling is mostly done by the mom. Though in a few cases I've seen some families have the dad do the teaching. My house had a large "school room" with several desks, dry erase boards, and a library of books. Me and my mom would sit at the desk together for most of the day following a school schedule.

I believe it varies from state to state. I know in Arkansas (where I grew up) if you were homeschooled, you had to take the GED (general education equivalency exam) and, if you passed, then you'd get your diploma.

Either way, Picard never existed in reality. It's all part of a nefarious plot to side track future history. No bold popinjay, not known for certain to have gotten laid once in 7 years, is going to go where no man has gone before.

I think homeschooling can work, but as others have said it would require the parent/s having the necessary skill level in all subjects (especially secondary school) for it to provide a really sound background for further education at the college level.

One person I met that was home schooled didn't have as much social interaction as she needed to function well once she got to college. She happened to be the daughter of a professor I had (science prof that was very religious at home... though that didn't interfere with his work). He asked me and the other women in my class (only three in our major) to help her get settled and "ease in" to the college life style. She was very shy and had limited social skills. She was also very young, only 15 starting college because she was bright and her parents taught her at home well above her age-grade level. She struggled at first making friends but she ended up adjusting fine with some time. In her case, the homeschooling environment allowed her to accelerate her learning and start college earlier. There was a social strain for her but not an academic one.

That being said, I loved my NYC public school education and wouldn't have traded it for anything. If my husband and I have children we won't be homeschooling.

I'm a huge Star Trek: TNG fan... I love Kirk, but Data was always my favorite character.... and I think Earl Grey is my favorite tea because of Picard.

Home schooling is like non-home schooling in that it's only as good as the people you have running it.

I have a friend who was home schooled down here in Houston. Her parents were anything but fundamental religious loons and she turned out just fine. There are lots of reasons a parent might choose to home school their child.

However, the largest reason seems to be one simple thing: religion has pretty much been expelled from public schools. Some families send kids to religious schools to get around that, but it can be difficult to find a local religious school if you aren't Catholic.

One of the problems here winds up being something I've noticed happening with religious fundamentalist families: they raise their kids in a 'bubble.' My boyfriend was raised in 'the mormon bubble' where all his friends and acquaintances were all other Mormons. I see the religious home schooling as another level of that bubble; you want to prevent them from having class mates who are outside your 'acceptable' group, you don't let them go to school. The problem is that school is supposed to prepare kids for getting out into the world and if you aren't learning to deal with people different from you, it's not going to happen. I mean, if they've never learned to tolerate homosexuals from having to go to school with a gay kid or a lesbian teacher, how are they going to react when they get a job and they have gay coworkers or supervisors?

Also, in the name of religion, I've seen some pretty awful science books written. Has anyone here seen the science book that was approved by Bob Jones University?
