Yeah, I'm an asshole, but that doesn't make you less of a holier-than-thou pseudophilisopintellectual. Seriously, you're a Hairy Krishna, dude, and are suggesting that the existential questions you post are rational of all things? Pfft.

You already felt like I was being holier-than-thou? I can tell we're gonna be friends.

You weren't doing that on purpose? It's not about my feelings. It is about how you are presenting yourself. The way you word your questions and the way you make assumptions based on an obvious lack of knowledge say an awful lot about you and your intentions. Here are a few pointers:

1. Existential questions have nothing to do with atheism

2. Creation myth and origin theory have nothing to do with atheism

3. Some of us do know a bit about Hare Krishna, so good luck defending that nonsense

4. The only way you could blow my mind is if you actually said something that didn't sound like regurgitated Creationist bullshit

Oh, and welcome to AF

I'm posing rational questions. I thought atheists would be more into that. But maybe when the questions get too hard, it's easier to give up and say something snotty.

I appreciate you telling me you don't know, though.

Lol.

Welcome. I have a good track record with you guys. They hold Krishna lunch at my fiance's college campus that is very inexpensive. Seem like a nice bunch, don't prove me wrong!

Far be it from me to ignore low lying fruit. I call myself an atheist because I am unaware of holding any belief in any gods. I find no such belief evidenced by any of my actions or values or dreams for that matter. Nada. Ergo, I call myself an atheist, one without belief in gods.

I'm surprised that you place as much importance in the traditional place gods have played in answering questions some people have had. I don't find myself so impressed by history and custom that I require a justification to depart from the norm. Perhaps you are different in that way? That's fine. If you're wondering how can I be so different than you, you just have too much time on your hands for wondering.

That depends on what one considers proof of something that does not exist.
Akincana Krishna dasa Wrote:Nor can they conclusively describe the origin of life and the universe in purely materialistic terms. I still can't figure out how the universe can come from nothing, for example, although I know there may be some smart arguments out there that try to make that case.
The universe did not come from 'nothing'. The 'space-time' energies have always existed. Just consider our universe as a 'weather' pattern. From your perspective, you want us to believe that this ever present energy is intelligent.
Akincana Krishna dasa Wrote:There are also obvious limitations on the theist side of this debate. Certainly direct experiential evidence of God isn't immediately available, at least to most people.
Try no one.
Akincana Krishna dasa Wrote:And all the classic arguments for God's existence (like ontological, teleological, cosmological) have their classic refutations, which is a problem for sure.
Fallacies usually are a problem.
Akincana Krishna dasa Wrote:As for my own take on evidence, argument and valid logic for justifying belief in God, it's a work in progress, definitely. I'll want to organize my thoughts before putting them out there to be shredded by an atheists forum.
Good luck on that.
Akincana Krishna dasa Wrote:I do believe in God very deeply, and have committed my life very seriously to trying to worship God. I think I'm here, partially, to retrace my philosophical steps to getting where I am.
Why?
Akincana Krishna dasa Wrote:Thanks, everyone, for being cool and welcoming me here.
You are welcome. Good to have you here.

Why would someone call themselves an atheist if they don't have an active disbelief in God?

Having an active disbelief in the existence of gods is not the same as claiming to KNOW a god does not exist.

Atheism is NOT the claim that a god does not exist. Atheism is the absence of BELIEF that a god exists. Atheism is not a position that concerns knowlesdge.

Quote:God has, historically, been a really popular answer for answering questions like "Why do I exist?" "Where does everything come from?" "Why can't I have or do whatever the hell I feel like?" "Why do I have to die?" Stuff like that, and more.

So was, "it is flat", was a really popular answer to, "what shape is the earth?". Appeal to popularity will always be fallacious.

Quote:As an atheist, it seems to me that the least you're saying is "Well, I know the answer to all those questions isn't God." So then what - do you have a better answer?

No.

Atheism is simply the response, "I don't believe your claim. Please provide me with demonstrable evidence, reasoned argument and valid logic to support it", when someone claims a god exists.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

The jackass signal must have went out, and there goes your pretense of being so kind and accommodating. Well, you can't. This is the internet and you're not equipped with the physical prowess necessary to hit a relatively fit person with a brick. Of course, you could sneak up on me when I am sleeping or try to corner me. Let me know if you need help fulfilling that dream. I'll try to help you out.
