some questions
#11
RE: some questions
Another one?

1 There's a long history of higher powers. They all never existed.
2. I believe in nothing. I rely on science.
3. We are still apes.
4. Death ends life.
5. Education, science.
6. Morality.
7. There's no meaning.
8. Atheism.

I didn't understand all the questions. What do I believe, or think? And 'meaning' of history, in what way? And who are 'we' in question 5?

RE: A few questions
1. I do not believe there is a god, due to lack of evidence
2. That question needs to be more specific
3. That question needs to be more specific
4. I believe that you live. I believe that you then die.
5. By observing evidence and testing the results.
6. Empathy.
7. That question needs to be more specific.
8. I have no belief in god/gods. That makes me atheist, which by the way is NOT a belief system.
You are currently experiencing a lucky and very brief window of awareness, sandwiched in between two periods of timeless and utter nothingness. So why not make the most of it, and stop wasting your life away trying to convince other people that there is something else? The reality is obvious.

Well, let's crack some knuckles!
(November 26, 2012 at 5:52 pm)gufis253 Wrote: 1. What do you believe about God?
I believe nothing about god.
(November 26, 2012 at 5:52 pm)gufis253 Wrote: 2. What do you believe about the universe?
I believe nothing about the universe.
I have access to observations which yield the information that it is composed of about 10 billion galaxies, each of them with about 10 billion stars and lots of these with planets. There are also other astronomical bodies such as nebulae, black holes, quasars, etc...
All in all, it's really big.... mind-boggling big...
Try to make sense of this image, if you can:

(November 26, 2012 at 5:52 pm)gufis253 Wrote: 3. What do you believe about the nature of human beings?
I believe nothing about the nature of human beings.
I'm aware that they belong to the species Homo Sapiens, of the primates group which are a part of the mammals which are animals.
Homo Sapiens is the only known living species to have developed abstract reasoning and has managed to become the most prosperous living organism on Earth, surviving in almost all possible places on the surface.

(November 26, 2012 at 5:52 pm)gufis253 Wrote: 4 What do you believe about life and death?
I believe nothing about life and death.
I know that living organisms live and, eventually, die. When they die, their chemical constituents are returned to the ecosystem.
(November 26, 2012 at 5:52 pm)gufis253 Wrote: 5. How do we get knowledge?
There are a few mechanisms for that.
-Direct observation (not only by seeing things, but by using any other of our senses).
-Indirect observation (instrumental aids)
-Observation by other people, corroborated by yet other people.
-Postulation of theories which manage to explain observations. The postulations then become a very likely body of knowledge.
- others... wiki tends to be thorough on these subjects.
(November 26, 2012 at 5:52 pm)gufis253 Wrote: 6. How do you determine right and wrong?
The golden rule seems the best ally, here. "Do unto others what you'd like them to do to you; don't do unto others what you wouldn't like them to do to you". I'd say it comes mostly from my upbringing which already included this rule and, perhaps, other rules for a few details not covered by the golden rule.
(November 26, 2012 at 5:52 pm)gufis253 Wrote: 7. What is the meaning of history?
History: the record of events from the past.
It helps us not repeat the same mistakes over and over again.... but it's efficacy is debatable.

Generally speaking, atheist, or to be more specific, agnostic atheist.

I'm more interested in hearing what type of institution the OP attends. So, OP, how about it?

That's a rhetorical question, I already know, down to the specific institution. Just curious to see how forthcoming the OP is with the information.

I can only suspect that the community the OP is in isn't exactly diverse as the OP has to resort to the internet to get differing views...

If by "community" you mean "school", I'd have to say you're getting warm.

(BTW, the two identical threads were both merged into this one. OP, please don't create duplicate threads. Thanks)

RE: some questions
What you have all summed up is true. I'm taking a first year course at a bible college. I'm working on broadening my understanding of other peoples' beliefs, religions, worldviews, etc. I was brought up Christian and honestly don't know many people who aren't Christian. I'm not looking to debate any of you on what you do or do not believe. I'm honestly just looking for answers to the questions so that I can understand things better. Oh, and sorry for the spelling error!

RE: some questions
If it's not too late, I'd like to update my answer to q7 by appending Santayana's classic observation that "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". The question itself is still gibberish, however.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

With some quick google searching, I was able to determine it's a bible college and its approximate geographical location.

By the way, the spelling error isn't half as problematic as the category one.
