Can't say I haven't considered it. Sadly, I'm broke and travel is expensive for a poor student like myself. Plus, I have family and friends here I want to stay around. Lastly, other nations have their own immigration policy and, as of now, they probably wouldn't let me in.... at least not until I graduate, since nurses are in demand everywhere.

On a more serious note, part of me wants southern, conservative states to start secession simply because the rest of the nation would become more liberal as a result of not having far right wack-jobs pushing federal legislation into crazy town. However, since I live in Texas, I know my state would be the first to go and I'd need to get far away from here, fast. I can't imagine Texas being GLBT friendly if not for the fact that the pesky constitution is getting in their way. I mean, consensual homosexual sex was only decriminalized here because of a supreme court ruling in 2003.

Rand Paul caused a great deal of controversy when he told Rachel Maddow that he believed businesses had the right to discriminate on the basis of skin color.

I believe they do as well. I wouldn't ever use such a business, but people can be discriminatory, and businesses should too. I doubt such businesses would last very long in modern society...the vast majority of people are not racists.

A man who associates with men who are openly racist, white-supremacist bigots...chances are he's one of them. You can't use the "he's a Libertarian, and that's why!" argument, either. Scott Walker claims to be a libertarian but he as good as kowtows to federal law on issues like marijuana legalization, and he has been rigorous in his implementation of forcing homeowners to abide by increasingly strict housing regulations.

You can judge by the company someone else keeps, and 99 times out of 100 you will be right on the money with what you initially judged based on that. And I judge Rand Paul to be a racist dirtbag, because he associates with racist dirtbags. "Birds of a feather..."

Usually, I'd agree with you because seccession would be a horrible idea for them. Problem is, the tea party has kinda taken over the Republican party and they aren't exactly known for making reasonable, rational choices. I mean, this is the party that thought Michelle Bachmann was a good representative for themselves. This is the party that bemoaned that Romney wasn't conservative enough. This is the party whose candidates turned the Republicans into 'the rape party.' So even if it makes no logical sense for them to leave the union, I can still see them doing it.

Another worry, as for that chart, notice how my state, Texas, actually pays more in taxes than they take in? Financially speaking, Texas could actually get by without the rest of the union. The other states might be able to do better than you'd think since they can simply drop programs they don't like such as medicare, food stamps or public schools.

Then again, if Texas does leave the union, I could probably get into some other country as a refugee.

To play devil's advocate (without using my redneck voice and yell, "If you don't luv Amerkuh, then you can git out!"), I think the fiscal cliff thing is being subjected to quite a lot of spin from Obama's people. For example, they've successfully defined it as solely an issue about taxes on rich people, but Boehner has some other objections, as well:

1. He won't surrender his party's control of debt-ceiling negotiations (this is a political tactic, but that's the game, folks)
2. He thinks we need to address entitlements more seriously.

The first point is a philosophical one as well, in that Congress should have the right to control the debt ceiling. If the GOP was more cooperative, I'd be more supportive of Boehner. The problem is that they're in the hands of some real economic extremists--like, I'm afraid to say, Rand Paul. Now, the Paul clan is more amenable to negotiation than someone like Sarah Palin, but only just. They really are the true believers of anti-government ideology, and that's just not very helpful in a debt crisis-recession dynamic.

The second point is more substantive, in my view. The big budget items on the table include things like Social Security, which is political poison (look what happened to Romney). But, old people are determined to tax under-employed young people no matter what, just on principle and not genuine need. That's crazy. Plus, defense spending isn't coming down fast enough. We can make demand-side justifications for other big line items, like middle class tax cuts / entitlements, but cutting checks to retirees who don't need them, and carrying on our Sisyphean task in Afghanistan ad infinitum are not really sustainable arguments in a rational universe. Still Obama's team have avoided these more serious issues by playing up to Boehner's stupid defense of supply-side nonsense. They're walking right into the trap Barry set for them, just like Romney did for the entire election. Still, giving the GOP rope to hang itself with is also a stupid policy--that's how we got into Iraq.

So, in my view Boehner has raised some elements of legitimate issues, but he needs to concede that he's lost the public debate and save us from a double-dip recession. That means giving up his Speaker post. I bet he'll cry.

...how far should our government go with cultural distortions to redefine marriage in this country...since homosexual marriage between consenting adults is recognized in some states, why not take it farther to also include polygamous marriages between consenting adults where a man or a woman can legally marry multiple spouses?
