Rabbits and Rocket Science
I love the show "House M.D." and perhaps one of my favorite quotes came from Cameron when she was asked on her religious views. She attempted to avoid the argument and then said something so wise that I just had to stop and think about it.

Quote:Cameron: "If there is some higher order running the universe, it's probably so different from anything our species can conceive there's no point in our even thinking about it. But I doubt It gives a damn about my butt."
Foreman: "You believe God might exist, but you don't think about it? It's the most important issue—"
Cameron: "I think penguins might as well speculate about nuclear physics. Why are we having this conversation?"

All these debates and discussions are all useless. We are just penguins speculating nuclear physics if God is true, and if he/she is not, we are WASTING the precious time we have in this only life discussing it.

Then why are you here? Seriously.

BTW, if there is going to be a majority of people trying to tell me how I should live because they believe their god tells them so, damn straight I'll talk about it and it matters. And the comparison is misleading anyway, it's a false analogy. I would argue we do have the tools and means to discuss God just as we discuss nuclear physics. There may be a lot we don't know, but there is a lot that we do know and can make testable claims about, which consistently points to no god.

But the issue is that if there is an Omnipotent "God" then people trying to prove him to exist or prove him to not exist is ultimately useless. And although WE have the tools to discuss nuclear physics, do the penguins have the tools? I don't think their flippers are that dexterous. We don't have enough tools to prove or disprove a truly omnipotent being. We have the tools to discuss the bible, discuss religion and discuss morality. But as to the EXISTENCE of a Higher being whose intellect is far beyond what we are? Its pretty much useless. Its as if fish started having debates as to why their fish friends are missing.
And the reason I'm here is to discuss religion, morality, philosophy and facts so as far as I can tell, I have a good reason to be here.

I enjoy discussing God, so I will persist. Just as I enjoy philosophy, regardless of how practial or not it is. On the other hand - I highly doubt penguins enjoy discussing nuclear physics or are they even capable of doing so! (duh). What do you think of that point?

I like the quote where Greg House says "Faith? That's just another word for ignorance isn't it?" Tongue

I don't need to disprove God. There's no reason to believe he exists. The evidence of God fails to land on the blank slate I have, my lack of belief in him.

Even though I also see penguins hurting their flippers It's still interesting to consider. You still have to test if it's right.

Frodo, I prefer to go searching for Celestial Teapots, I like to special plead doing that over your God that is just as futile a search. Sorry, they may both be equally ridiculous - but Celestial Teapots are more fun!

Well I agree with what Foreman appeared to be about to say ... can't remember the actual quote but it was something like:

I don't understand why people are apathetic towards claims of the existence of god. I mean it's important ... if they are wrong then they are wasting their entire loves believing in something for no reason, if I am wrong then my entire worldview is fucked up.

Some bloke said it much better than that ... can't remember who! It is also, as far as I'm concerned, the answer to those theist like "The Truth" who can't understand why I am so dammed obsessed with religion.

Celestial Teapots pour tea over God's head where he can't see them, it ruins his haircut, he screams and he jumps out the window to fall and land on a spike; even God can't stop good ol' Bertrand Russell; 'nuff said.
