Again....But it's never the guns!
RE: Again....But it's never the guns!
I read this earlier, but someone presented an obvious and logical point. Gun violence is a symptom not the sickness. Let me spell it out here in the states. We live in a country that forces arbitrary morals on folks, views profit over family and environment. The family structure horrible at best. Emotional and mental illnesses and disorders are ignored by the business world. Wages for middle class remains stagnant as stresses to keep up with bills, costs of food and transportation continue to rise. Workloads are increasing with combined emphasis on long hours. Then you have Medicare costing so much that getting sick is a devastating event. Then you have college costing so much and thus hooking people with perpetual debt that will not go away even upon death. I only named a few issues and we wonder why people are going crazy?

Other modern industrialized nations have found ways to deal with healthcare and education while we continually slide further into the abyss of allowing criminal corporations to rip us off.

Those other nations have similar problems relating to modern life but they do seem to be controlling two factors which mitigate the violence. One, they do not have as many religious nuts walking around loose and two, they have strict gun control.

I would look at your recipe for the US - which I do not dispute - and suggest that it is even more important to get the guns off the street here as we have so many fucking nuts walking around loose.

I agree, as a gun owner I have no plans to use it to kill people. However, guns are in fact enabling crazy folks to commit these crimes much easier. Granted, I would go to town in the mall with a claymore. I feel focusing on "guns" is not the means to solve the wider issue. Guns can be 3D printed now, and that will improve as time progresses. So outright banning guns will solve nothing but keep them out of lawful citizens. Now that argument is used by pro-gun advocates to forward their odd agenda. I however mean that in the most literal of terms, I feel the root the problem is with in the mental instability of this Country. With that the apperent denial that there is something seriously wrong.

You know something? That's a canard. I'm far less worried about "criminals" with guns than I am about some nut with a gun. It's not the "criminals" who buy a gun at fucking WalMart and leave it lying around loaded so that their 2 year old can use it to blow his/her head off. It's those precious "law-abiding citizens" who repeatedly do that kind of stupid shit.

Ten times as many people are killed by motor vehicles - mostly by people doing stupid things that cause collisions. We need to work on the stupidity, the ignorance, the mental disease, the carelessness, the lack of responsibility of the people in this society. Y'know - the actual problem.

I'm all for rational approaches to gun ownership, but keeping guns out of the hands of crazy people requires addressing the problem of why we have crazy people roaming free - undiagnosed, untreated, uncared for.

I agree we need rational and reasonable gun control laws. We cannot prevent negligent accidents because someone was irresponsible. The main issue here is the untreated mental issues in this country. These violent crimes will continue to rise as greed takes more and more of our lives. Not to mention the amount of suicides due to these stresses.

Because we don't want to pay to treat them.

It is really just that simple.

It's far cheaper to have the cops lock them up.

Agreed.

Weapons and firearms should be issued by the state to patriotic families of good reputation.
Not to individuals of dubious associations.

The Second Amendment is written in direct opposition to your idea.

Not really. The back story is fascinating.

Quote:Thanks to a long-time Black Ink reader and commenter, Paul Udstrand, my attention was recently called to a long, fascinating 1998 law review article by a law professor who specializes in gun issues which argues that the Second Amendment was added to the Constitution to reassure white slave-owning southerners that the federal government would not use its Constitutional power over state militias to disarm the southern states and leave them vulnerable to a slave revolt.
