Yeah, you would have thought that. But that particular circle, at the time that I was in Chicago, had a priest (can't remember his name) who had a girlfriend named "Morta" (for some reason, that name sticks) who was into that stuff. Even if it was a one-time only deal, I wasn't into that.

Just within the context of the bible's fictional world, god created it all, god created the serpent knowing what it was going to do, and god allowed death to come into the world. It's all there in the book, despite how apologists contort to deny that.
