The middle class was never overthrown, and the means of production has never, and will most likely never be under the control of the people. There are just too many greedy bastards out there for a utopian egalitarian society to be feasible.

Also it advocates the brutal overthrow of the middle and upper class, condoning mass murder if need be, and describes a thoroughly unfair means by which everyone lives, where no matter what one does int heir lives, they will never achieve anything great than any other John Doe.

I didn't mean utopian as in like the social utopias like those of Robert Owen, the Shakers, or Charles Fourier, I used utopian there to mean an ultimate form of a society towards which Marx believed the society of his day would graduate towards, which is what he essentially prophesied in the Communist Manifesto with the proletariat taking control of the means of production and eventually destroying all distinctions of social rank.

My affiliation with communists ended when a student communist group in munich, placed me on a "gulag list".

A list they had for people whom they would send to "gulag" after "taking power", they kept this list not even as a joke but took it seriously.

Plus, recent history here has shown the brutality with which a communist regime supresses it`s people and crushes creativity and the individual.

Socialism in the modern context is the application of general welfare programs, such as universal healthcare, unemployment support, etc.
