Girlfriendless I may be, but I am not a "phylosopher of little true objective" (whatever that means). I have not heard of phylosophers before, are they anything like philosophers?

(P.S. The original phrase was "May the power of Christ compel you", not anything from Star Wars)

Why it cannot be both, invented and discovered ? Smile

The ratio was discovered. We still have not invented a way to represent it.

The fundamental form of this question is, Were numbers discovered or invented?

It is a fairly simple answer once you recognize there are different kinds of numbers even though they appear to be the same.

Counting numbers are different from numbers used for calculation, numbers that operate upon each other. One can look at a number of things and count them as four things. One cannot add four apples and four bananas and four people and get twelve unless one abstracts to twelve things. One you abstract you are no longer counting but operating on numbers. Those are different kinds of numbers.

Counting is a trick we discovered but observing small numbers is something most animals can do. The can see the difference between one and two. Chimps can observe the difference up to five if I remember correctly. But none can abstract to calculate.

The trick of counting is an invention of sorts, very useful, but it is merely tagging what we see. What we do is no different from hanging numbered cards on things until we run out of things to hang cards on and then use the last number. It is a way to get beyond what we can observe without counting which is less than ten for most people. See chimps above.

So really all we did was come up with a gimmick to count more than we can observe. That is one kind of numbers. A rather uninteresting kind as the focus in the trick used.

Manipulating numbers is an incredibly recent event. Pi was "discovered" by the Greeks but they use geometry.

The WIN/Gallup End of Year Survey 2013 found the US was perceived to be the greatest threat to world peace by a huge margin, with 24% of respondents fearful of the US followed by: 8% for Pakistan, and 6% for China. This was followed by 5% each for: Afghanistan, Iran, Israel, North Korea. -LINK

"That's disgusting. There were clean athletes out there that have had their whole careers ruined by people like Lance Armstrong who just bended thoughts to fit their circumstances. He didn't look up cheating because he wanted to stop, he wanted to justify what he was doing and to keep that continuing on." - Nicole Cooke

Genesis 1:1 in Hebrew = 7 words / The number of letters x the product of the letters / The number of the words x the product of the words / you get 3.1416 x 1000000000000000000 thats the value of Pi to four decimal places !

And the brain of men has since done 2.54142 trillion times (note the five decimal places right here) better than your poor omniscient and minipotent god!

Btw, what is with the x10000000000000000? you omniscient god is totally ignorant about the importance of getting the order of magnitude right?

So much fuss over something so beautiful, Pi is an endless number just as a circle is an endless line. In Pi one can find everyone's birth date from the beginning of time, everyone's street address is in Pi, even the distance from any point on earth to any other point can be found in Pi, all the phone numbers in the world are in Pi, Pi is a wonderful number no matter whether it was discovered or invented. Hurray for Pi.
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

Also: Hurray for most (i.e. I'm pretty sure the exceptions form a set of measure* zero) irrational numbers.

More to the point: Hurray for almost all real numbers. There is an uncountably infinite set of things to be amazed at here.

Pi isn't a thing, and was neither discovered or invented. It is a mathematical statement about a relationship.

A circle, by definition, is not a line.
