Another person shot by an infant with a gun.

RE: Another person shot by an infant with a gun.
Quote:Black powder aint for accuracy - it's to give the game a sporting chance. I'd say 50 yards is 40 too far..lol. (3 rounds a minute with a pan or blasting caps? Impressive either way. I get off a heady max of 2 rounds a year with mine..lol)

It's a flintlock so yeah, a pan. The trick is to do what they did which was make up a paper cartridge ( formed around a large dowel - twist the bottom to close it. Then pour a measured charge - 100 grains for the muskets - into the paper tube and put the ball (.715) on top of the powder charge then twist the top closed. Store it in a cartridge box that you wear over the shoulder.

When loading, you take the cartridge in your right hand, bite off the bullet. Pour the powder down the barrel, follow it with the paper cartridge to act as a wad, spit the bullet into the barrel (which is the way THEY did it....I would take the bullet out of my mouth and put it in the barrel...ram the whole thing home...prime the pan with 4F powder from a small powder horn and be ready to fire. Light infantry/skirmishers would fire at will. Line infantry would wait for the command to volley fire. But yeah, 20 seconds to load a musket is quite doable because the barrel is smooth and there is no resistance going down...until the gun gets fouled by the black powder residue.

Oddly, the French Charleville was ballistically superior to the British Brown Bess. It fired a .68 ball out of a .69 bore which meant much less windage.

As for accuracy...my son once put 11 shots in a row into the black with a .50 Pennsylvania flintlock rifle. Young eyes!

See, I did some "aftermarket" to my little family heirloom. I did this without reservation because the thing didn;t stick with our family because it was pretty or had historical value, it stuck because it was useful. I ditched the pan and it uses caps now. I don't go much on the cartridges (but i do have spent and hinged rifle cartridges that I use to measure the charge. Sights mounted, nice new stock with some absorption on it. Mostly use small bits of cotton for wadding, and the balls are hollow backed cones (that allow the slightly smaller ball to expand into the newly rifled barrel). I have a breech loading black powder that's much more reliable (and much faster) but it toes the line.

I suppose it would be fun to try my hand at some really vintage stuff, but I don't do much target shooting with anything but my .22. The rest are for hunting, and since I'm an ambush kind of guy (that doesn't fire at moving game with rifles) I get one shot, usually from a range where I can see their pupils dilate, and that's the end of it for me.

There was a guy who used to go to the Brookhaven range in NY who would load his flintlock and put a small measure of corn meal between the powder charge and the patched ball. He claimed that it prevented the ball from being flattened by the charge. I don't know about that but the bastard made everybody hungry.

See, I wanna get a hold of an American Long Rifle. Hell with those fast-loaders, gimme accuracy any day. Big Grin

Especially cuz if I go hunting I'm really, REALLY not bringing any of my current firearms to go hunting. An AK-47 against a deer? I can't even begin to say in how many ways that's just so fucking wroooong.

I guess if I was REALLY hungry and sportsmanship wasn't a factor, maybe. But either I'll go trapping, or I'll go with the classics.

This is not particularly "long" but it is a lot easier to load than a five foot long barrel.

I haven't dealt with Dixie for years but I always found them reputable.

Oh nonholy atheismo yes.

I've always wanted to go hunting with a black-powder muzzle-loader rifle. The reason is pretty simple; it's a test of your accuracy. You nail that first shot, because if you don't, you aren't bagging anything for thirty minutes. The gunshot is loud, and reloading takes a while, so if you miss that first shot, you're scaring off the game you're aiming at and any game within hearing, too. No quickly cycling a bolt for another shot; one and done. It's what I've always loved about firearms is the test of accuracy, of trying to master precision, in the variable ways. I figure black-powder rifle hunting would be the ultimate test of accuracy with a firearm.

Given that I live in Wisconsin, which has tons of hunting [most of it actually pretty necessary; apparently last few years they suspended hunting in a bunch of areas, and a whole mess of deer populations basically starved to death from overpopulation, so they unsuspended it], the opportunity for this would be rather easy for me to indulge in.

Something tells me my first forays will be anything but successful. XD

Not to mention illegal for both semi-auto and magazine capacity in every state I have heard of.

More like five states. The vast majority of states in the US do not actually state that it is illegal to own a fully automatic assault weapon. Or to operate one. Remember, the AR ban expired in '04 and hasn't been renewed. Yet. Purchasing is a different matter. For example: I own a fully-automatic 1949-manufactured AK-47 with a customized optics rail and a modified magazine well to allow for attaching a 100-round drum, among a couple other modifications. I can walk around with this thing in plain sight in over 40 states in the US, as long as I am in areas where guns are not prohibited.

I also have an Accuracy International AS-50. Yes, I have a .50 BMG-caliber anti-materiel rifle. Again, I can wander around with this thing in my hands, as long as I am not in gun-prohibited areas. I can walk past a police car, and as long as I show 'em my permit and registration, I can just scare the shit out of everyone within viewing distance if I so desire.

I don't, of course, because this would be retarded, and a supremely dick move at that. But I could. And so could everyone else who gets a hold of one legally.

Great thing is I got these guns legally. Class F permit, and the AS-50 was given to me by my brother, who has a military-acquisition-level permit, allowing him to buy any kind of gun he desires. I had to sign some paperwork to make the transfer legit, but...there it is.

So, yes, you might want to do a bit more reading on all these states you know of, cuz...apparently you...

Eh, fuck it, I have no real inclination to be snarky today.

Also; unless you meant at the federal level, where such guns tend to be restricted...unless, again, you have a permit.

I should point out that getting permits for such guns? It's NOT easy. At all. My former diagnosis of schizophrenia almost barred me from it, if it weren't for the fact I've been declared several times over in the past to not be a danger to society. [truth be told, schizophrenics rarely ever are dangers. Sociopaths, however...different matter entirely.] I've made damn sure to not give them an excuse to ever revoke my permits, too.

Nah, just the ultimate test of stupidity in the prey. See...what you do is plant some rye at the base of a nice thick tree (in which you place your stand) and then scatter a shitload of corn on the ground (preferrably dusted with apple powder) then you just wait to blast the first dipshit who comes within - maybe 15 feet- of you. You can get a really clean shot that way, no struggling, no kicking around in pain, just dead. Also saves you the trouble of chasing a wounded animal through the brush - cuz lets face it, no one wants to have to chase their dinner through snake country.

When using a flintlock be careful to a) not put too much powder in the flash pan and b) do NOT tilt it so that it is piled against the vent hole. I know that b) is counter-intuitive but what happens is that you can end up with what amounts to a "fuse situation." You want the powder in the pan to ignite and flash...not burn.

Second if using a percussion rifle or a flintlock wrap a piece of leather around the firing mechanism to protect it from moisture. Also, keep the weapon at half-cock until ready to fire.
