religion VS mental illness
#11
RE: religion VS mental illness
I don't think being religious is a mental illness. I think it's looking for an answer to life. They're settling for a stupid one, but noneoftheless.

I mean, killing yourself or others in the name of Christ with poisoned fruit punch...maybe that'll classify you as a mentally ill person. But simply believing in God? No.

I don't know that I'd call it mentally "ill." I think of religious assholes as having personality flaws.

Ummm, since when is being an asshole not a personality flaw?

Lots of people grow out of it.

I think the only really mentally ill people are the young-earth fundamentalists, evolution deniers, and those who insist that people take them seriously when they reveal that they are direct mouthpieces for the creator of the universe.

I think a lot of religious people really just don't take their religion seriously, or have accepted the label of Christian without ever thinking too much about what that means they are supposed to believe in addition to the easy ones like an invisible sky daddy.

Don't you guys have a whole rulebook of the things you're supposed to believe? Have you read it? It's got some pretty crazy stuff in there, I think is the point.

well the "rule book" is not crazy. You understand that we have to make laws that tell people they can't texted and drive. So let's not blame a book here guys.
aside from them as "evil" vs. us as having the "truth". What does it tell you about our species? I mean that as a real question. I see us as 1/2 a step away from monkeys. Some of us are our next thought. Others have the ability to make "other"" choices. And some can see us as what we are better than others.

The title should really be "religious belief and mental illness" as they are really one and the same, if we assume a "mental illness" to be something that obstructs the person from attaining the truth about reality Big Grin

So much for rational. Seems our enemy is just like us. More evidence that the bible speaks the truth.
