I'm not... welcome to the forum. I have tentatively high expectations for you based on what you've put out so far... I sincerely hope that they be met Smile

Those are very kind words indeed! I hope I can muster some sticktoitiveness with this site.

My intellectual work ethic waxes and wanes, so I tend to take long breaks from challenging dialogue. I'll see how I go.

Nice welcomes like yours always halp. Tongue Not sure about "exceeding" expectations though. Cross Fingers

RE: ReasonableRuben
Welcome Reuben. I should explain to everyone else that we are in an exchange program in which each of us is visiting the other's website. So far I have not been condemned or banned, and by far I have gotten more friendliness than resentment.

Whether you want to do this here or not is entirely up to you since this is your introduction thread. But I'd be curious if you have any other aspirations for your time here than philosophy talk and getting to know the natives. Wink I can vouch for your not being a missionary. Smile I truly hope you enjoy your visit. There are many good and learned philosophizers here. Apo might be both the most brilliant and the best read, but be careful. She is like a cat. She may let you pet her one moment but scratch your eyes out the next. "Doesn't suffer fools lightly" comes to mind when it comes to that one - but no pressure. Angel Chad is one of our more intellectually inclined theists and a Swedenborgian to boot.

There are some who will want to pull your wings off just to see what happens, so it is best not to expect a certain standard of manners. When attacked it will be no good to cry for justice. The best thing is just to say "you sir are a lout and of no interest to me, now shove off". It is best to say it in a firm voice while staring their avatar directly in the eye. If you find yourself cornered in a scene reminiscent of "Lord of the Flies", it is best to remind yourself that you are still safely in your study and in no real peril. Not everyone on this planet will love or care for you, so .. how to put this delicately? .. piss on them.

Whew, whateverist, you're a tough act to follow.

I'll just say welcome, and leave it at that for now.

Welcome!

@whateverist: Cthulhu Dreaming is right. That was both helpful and gave me lolz at the same time. Smile

If I'm going to be super honest with myself and others such as yourself, I'd have to say that I have certain insecurities that draw me to places such as ReasonableFaith forums and here. I desperately want people to like me. I want my word to mean something to them. I want to be respected... and so I will conduct myself in such a way as I perceive I ought to act in order to gain respect. Then, perhaps, fruitful dialogue will come much easier.

In some sense it's an intellectual game. In another sense, my world-view arrests this thought and reminds me, "these are real people with souls."

In one sense I am close-minded; at least insofar as it is true that I very much doubt that my views on fundamental theistic concepts will change. In another sense, I'd like to consider myself as being open-minded, having recently come to accept the theory of evolution as an adequate explanation of cosmic and biological complexity.(though I hold this belief loosely as I'm basically taking "modern science's" word for it)

This is some of the psychology that drives me.

May I also commend you, whateverist, as a proper and decent chap. Big Grin

Ehh, they were more like hopeful words than kind ones. I'm hoping for that too Smile We're down Tacky, and it's a wound that's hurt for a long time.

All of my ethics have extremely low tides and incredibly high tides, with little similar between them save that they're made of water, and they get tugged on by gravity.

You're the lucky one... had I found this but five hours later, I'd be telling you how much you suck and that I hate your guts. Or maybe I would just steal your car.

Save your life.... Thinking Steal your car... both good options.

Psh... whateverist talking about the forum philosophers, and he ranks Chad before me? CHAD.

He knows NOTHING!

* Violet intentionally avoids analyzing that, because it's quite incorrect, and it would be a major distraction.

Now Violet, I clearly was giving Chad a nod in the category of theist philosophizer. I did not know you had become a theist. (Congratulations, which is the lucky cult?)

Welcome.

You should be flattered that you have given Violet expectations. She normally couldn't care less about newcomers.

You might be able to make people like you, yes, but most likely you won't be able to make them like your religion. Wink

I am one good example of that.
