Schizophrenic Room-mate

I do not have personal contact info for his family, but I'm going to ask the apartment management if they are on file when I talk to them today.

How about if I mentioned that we have not one... but *two* rooms ready for you? Angel

Vae: Yes indeed. Big Grin I might consider taking you up on that offer, actually, depending on how things turn out.

I spoke the apartment management, they're gonna talk to their supervisor and call me sometime before wednesday about what they think we should do. It could just be something where they deny his re-application for lease based on the condition of his room, and plus the mere fact that we feel threatened. Technically, they can reject any lease they want, and if they feel they have probable cause to evict based on reasons of a resident's personal safety, they can, according to the lease agreement.

My life is always exciting, there's never a dull moment, no matter how desperately I try for there to be many of them... XD

Hey, welcome back, TGAC. Big Grin

Gil: Nope. Something for which I'm grateful, considering the man does not bathe. At ALL. There's a five foot minimum safe distance radius that must be maintained at all times lest his funk burn your brain via the nose.

I don't know, Creed. I'd suggest getting out in any way possible. Do you really want your tombstone to read "Died because he wanted to save a few bucks?"

RE: Schizophrenic Room-mate
The most common type of schizophrenia is paranoid type, so that prolly explains the weapons. Sooner or later this guy is going to decompensate and you do not want to be around when he does. He just might get it in his head that you or your roomie or both of you are the enemy. Unfortunately they emptied out the hospitals long ago due to the misbegotten notion that severely mentally ill people did not need to be in there and that they could be given what services they need in the community. It has not worked. The community does not care. Funding keeps being cut. Nobody cares about what happens to people such as your roomie-from-hell, as they see it as something that doesn't impact upon them. That is until some agency wants to open up a residence in their neighborhood, then they get all NIMBY. They don't care if it gets opened up at all, so long as it doesn't get opened in their community.

Most schizophrenics are not violent, just scared as hell most of the time. But they deal with their paranoia mostly by keeping to themselves as much as possible. When receiving treatment they can manage well enough. This guy's problem is that he is not receiving treatment, and is not interested in so doing. Legally, your hands are tied as to making him get any treatment. You can try talking to him, but that is not likely to change his mind, it would be more likely that it would push his paranoia buttons. Is there any way that you can contact his family? Even if you could I would doubt that it will have much efficacy. They've probably given up on him by now, you said that he's 41 years of age and it does not appear from what you've said that they take much, if any, interest in his life. You can't make anyone receive treatment if they don't want it. The only exception to that is if they are a danger to themself or others. I can only see a solution if you can get some cooperation from the landlord if you can get them to evict him, but that could get messy and cause him to decompensate. Where that to happen, someone might get hurt.

I know none of this is what you want to hear, but legally, that is as much his home as yours. Forcing him to leave is not going to be easy. Perhaps you could contact the office of your local tenant rights association, or you city council member (or alderman or whatever the title is in your locality) and get a good feel for who has what rights in your town. Wish I could have been more help.

Creed - Move out. You're dealing with a lunatic in a State that doesn't give a damn about going too far and committing murder even if one is known to be a danger to others on virtue of mental illness.

And your other roommate who let this guy in is highest caliber of stupid. Well meaning but stupid as fuck.

RE: Schizophrenic Room-mate
Well, I have two things going for me. At least, I think I do. First being that he seems to regard me as a semi-friend, or at least someone he isn't afraid of [he'll seek my company out from time to time]. Second being that the renewal on the lease is coming up here. Apparently he wants to re-new his lease. My room-mate only told me this after I mentioned that I was going to work on getting him either removed, or blocked on a second lease. Why she hasn't told me before is beyond me. Ileah...yeah, Moros pretty much nailed it. She's well-meaning but the woman is just in her own little world, has her head in the clouds, and is completely, totally, blissfully unaware. She has all the perceptiveness of a blind otter, and it drives me nuts sometimes, especially when it causes situations like this.

Her biggest problem is she's way too trusting, and she's gullible as FUCKING HELL. It's screwed her over I dunno how many times in the time we've been living together, where she trusts people implicitly for no reason [and sometimes in direct evidence to the contrary].

So I told her that from here on out, any time we have someone else thinking about moving in with us, they go through me, first, cuz clearly I can't trust her to cautious enough for the sake of basic safety. She didn't even think to ask ANYTHING about this guy whatsoever. For all she knew, she was inviting a fucking rapist to come live with us.

*pinches bridge of his nose*

Worse, she was inviting a fucking murderer to come live with us. A paranoid schizophrenic killer. Fucking...ARGH!!

So anyway. I told the apartment people that it comes down to the following: Either he goes, or me and Ileah go. They lose one, or they lose two. Simple as that. I'm going to wait to hear something from them only as late as tuesday, if I hear nothing, I'm going to go into the office and tell them that if they haven't come to a decision by Friday, that we're going to start making plans to bail. That'll get them moving. As far as eviction goes, if it causes decompensation, well, I'll be keeping my phone VERY fucking close by with 911 on speed-dial. On the plus side, the guy weighs maybe 160 lbs and I weigh around 190, so if it comes to a grapple while the cops come, I can hold my own.

So, I'm covered, at least, as best as I can be, for now. We'll see where the apartment company is going to take this, and...guess I'll proceed from there.

I'm going to chew Ileah out over this if this gets ugly, I really am.
