This comes to one of those libertarian-vs-liberal things. "Do we let them poison themselves or try to stop them?" Well, truth be told, if they want to sell it, then by all means, let them sell it. But first, they need to have their bottles labeled VERY CLEARLY what the dangers of drinking raw milk are. ALL the dangers, too, on EVERY bottle. If they think they should be allowed to sell their product WITHOUT warning labels, then no. No, you should not be allowed to do that, because then it's just outright negligence of responsibility. If you sell a product that could be hazardous to health and safety then it needs to be very labeled as such, and failure to do so should result in massive fucking fines. It's all very well and good to say "if people want to subject themselves to risk then they should be allowed to," and, sure, they should be. But only if they KNOW it's a risk. If you just let guys like this sell raw milk and all that's on the bottle is just "this is raw milk!" and nothing else, then people might go "...Well, maybe it tastes better," without having a chance to learn what the dangers are. Fuck knows I dunno what the hell kinda dangers are entailed in non-pasteurized milk, I can't exactly say I've dedicated any portion of my life to studying fucking milk production, so if I were to buy a bottle of it, and it didn't have a listed warning, I'd be buying something that the seller KNEW could be dangerous, but failed to inform me that it was so, and the seller has a responsibility to inform the purchasing parties of the risks involved.

Worth re-posting.

There's nothing wrong with pasteurized milk.

I kinda agree with you... Kids should be protected from their parent's stupidity... But I'm not a fan of over-regulating parenting either... I'm on the fence I guess Undecided

If we agree that parents shouldn't be allowed to choose faith healing over FDA and AMA approved medical treatment, then they shouldn't be allowed to chose non FDA approved milk.

When you are 18 years old, you have the right to chose for yourself what you want to do to your body and yourself. People should not have the "right" to chose things that carry an active risk of fatal or severe infection for their children. We make clear instructions on medicines and you're not supposed to dose your kid. If caught doing so, you will be prosecuted. The same should be said for things like that - feed your kid raw milk, prosecute for irresponsible parenting.

There's absolutely nothing in raw milk that would outweigh the cost benefit of pasteurized milk. These people are fucking retarded, and children shouldn't have to pay the price of parents wanting to live in the stone age rather than the 21st century. We say the same all the time about kids being raised by religious wackos and their out-of-date scientific principles. Why not this too?

And then to claim it would be "necessary" for our health is really a marvelous feat of brain-washing. We have as much need for cows milk as we have for mouse milk or camel milk or cats milk.

I don't subscribe to the "naturalistic" fallacy here.

Besides, it's a good place to get Vit D - and more enjoyable than pill supplements - without having to also risk cancer.

Like any type of food - there are pros and cons to dairy Indian. It takes well to fortification, contains a robust nutrient profile (its a dense source), and is relatively easy to produce, process (this includes safety-cheese, yogurt....etc) and distribute (largely because of it being a liquid - and again the nutrient density). Not all of us carry the mutations required to adequately process dairy (several independantly arisen/region specific ones, btw) - so there's always that.

It's no coincidence that only relatively few people can actually digest dairy properly and that only since approx. ten-thousand years, which is a blink of an eye in evolutionary terms.

An even more enjoyable way to get Vit D is just to go out into the sun Bag

Sampling bias. Those cultures that leveraged cattle (or other milk producers) heavily have a very widespread distribution of the mutation in question. If you don't have it, don't drink it - really simple.

Which is great, south of Atlanta, in the summer, at noon (if you're light skinned, not elderly, and healthy). Anywhere else that aint gonna cut it. We fortified milk with D because we identified a serious absence of it;s presence - and this was back when people spent alot of time outside. So no dice. By the by, that fortification process is what gives milk, for me, it;s pleasant taste. I fucking hated drinking milk straight from the udder - even after it'd been separated. Tastes like creamy urine.

I just found out that here (Germany) the goverment health agencies have the right to "arrest" then transport and detain you in a maximum security hospital without a court order, if you have been found to have catched a extremly infectious and leathal disease, like cholera, smallpox or other. You are then kept in that maximum security hospital, classified as a threat to society, with as little physical contact to others as possible until you have been cured or died - after which you will be released.

Wow.

But it also makes sence to me, considering how infectious Cholera is.

Instead of focusing on the pseudophilosophical issue if one should be allowed to eat dangerous food, you should read through the descriptions of those bacterial infections and what damage they would cause in the case of a pandemic outbrake.

Correction, what damage they -did- cause. It's not a what-if issue. We've been there, done that. That's why we're here.
