Yeah, I think there is no evidence for souls. Dr. MacDougall had an interesting idea, but I would imagine it would be hard to get people to agree to be weighed while they die.

I'd be willing to let myself be weighed before my body is carted off to be be cut up by medical students (that's what I want when I die).

If it contributes to the debate then fine. :-) however, as Halcyonic says in the first reply to your OP:

"1. Why would losing weight after death, suddenly jump to the conclusion of it somehow being a "soul?". Isn't that kind of like, God of the gaps, only...'Soul(s) of the gaps' Instead?"

RE: souls
I no longer believe in souls, but if there is a consistent, abrupt drop in weight at the time of death in humans we would have to figure out an explaination, and it might be some "thing" in us that gives us life. Who knows?

This thread reminded me of this song. I really have nothing else to offer. Ok, I guess I could link to my own thread about souls back from when I believed in them:

I can't wait to get weighed myself, that would be wuvly.

(Enjoyed the video btw.)

RE: souls
I have an evidence that humans harbor in their bodies additional lives other than their own ones. These other lives last after humans' death, but not for eternity. I don't know if we can call this a "soul" or not.

The number of bacteria in a human body is more than ten times the number of its own cells. These bacteria are independent lives which differ from the human life. So we can say yes, we, atheists, believe in the concept of souls.
