Local Foods

RE: Local Foods
Maryland is known for its yummy blue crabs. But if you're in DC, check out Ben's Chili Bowl on U St. Awesome chili dogs and chili cheese fries! Only eat on the rare occasion, unless you want to have a coronary.

What are your favorite local foods? Is there anything that you can only find where you live? Any crazy family recipes?

I'm in Mississippi. We have lots of "Southern" food.
Cornbread, okra, Lima beans, Black eyed peas, Chow chow.
My family has a recipe that noone knows where it came from. We have never found it anywhere but in the family. We call in Banana salad. Eggs, vinegar, sugar. Its a sauce. It is odd and amazing.

Please share your foodie favorites.

Not sure what is specifically native to San Diego. Maybe fish tacos, which I do not like. I will say sushi is a very popular eat here, and I love it. Especially since I've become somewhat of a Japanophile as a result of watching so many J-vlogs on Youtube by northamerican expats.

ETA: Actually, a quick search on Wikipedia reveals that carne asada fries are actually a San Diego original. And I do like them. However, I have a sensitive tummy, and the only ones I have found are rather greasy and cause me major issues.

Here in AZ I am amazed at all the Mexican restaurants seeing as how they hate fucking Mexicans.

Apparently the old rednecks hate cooking for themselves even more.

On, D, D & D on the Food Network, they talked about some place---I believe it was in Gilbert or another Phx suburb---that was famous for selling both chinese and mexican food. Two carne asada tacos and a side of shrimp fried rice, anybody?

I saw that. I thought it actually looked pretty good.

If I were the mayor I'd kick your ass out. Run, don't walk, to the Prado restaurant in Balboa park. For lunch (they're not served for supper) order the damned fish tacos. If you do not love these see your doctor.

Oh thank god.

Big Grin

Word! You beat me to it. I remember being so disappointed eating lobster at a picnic on some granite right next door to the lobsterman that caught it on Deer Isle, Maine. Admittedly, you can eat almost anything dipped in butter but the texture! Mealy and rubbery. My advice is to grind them up and feed them to dungeness crabs.

Fish tacos are an abomination. Why anyone would want to take something so awesome as a taco and ruin it with something so nasty as a fish is beyond me.
