Awfully superstitious thing to say considering how advanced star trek was supposed to be. the TNG episodes that deal with the idea of gods were good though.

You took something completely different out of that episode than I did, it seems. I know Kirk is a bit preachy, but he always seemed very skeptical too of lots of different things (though he would time upon time come up with baseless theories that somehow ended up correct...would that make Kirk a God or a Prophet?).

At any rate, I thought him saying, "the one we have is enough," was something he came up with out of contempt for meeting the real Apollo. Kinda like saying, "It's enough that people worship that one god on earth, but now you, Apollo, want to join the party again? Fuck this shit..." I mean, Roddenberry was definitely an atheist, so I didn't read too much into it when Kirk talked about god. Heck, even in the Fifth Star Trek movie where they travel to the center of the Galaxy to meet "God", Kirk is the one to ask, "What does God need with a Spaceship?" Or maybe his character had simply developed to a higher level by that time. Thinking

Oh, I never saw it that way. Hm, could be, that would be more consistent with the star trek world. thanks! that episode really bothered me, not because that star trek still has a god, but that it's so inconsistent with the rest of star trek.

And I read originally they were going to make roddenberry include a chapel on enterprise, but he said no. So i thought kirk's line in that episode could have been from pressure to make the show more acceptable.

Just like how primal people used to explain things they did not understand (nobody wants to be the "dum dum"), a god is just an assumption.
Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die, and be free of pain, or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!
