Building HTPC Cheap

RE: Building HTPC Cheap
I have the WDTV SMP model (streaming media player). I have thrown all kinds of file types at it and it plays them all!

Netflix and Hulu work as well

I almost forgot. I need to order an inexpensive 2.1 speaker setup for the bedroom. I had a good set, but my ex-best-friend has it, and I don't care to speak to her.

Does anybody know if you can use multiple PCIE, non-SLI/Crossfire cards to expand the number of displays under Eyefinity? I haven't gotten around to testing that configuration.

To expand the number displays require special cabling. I have to look up the equipment. We have a Cinemassive equipment list for the hdmi cable part number.

Someone tell me I'm dreaming, and that I didn't start looking at a $25 pair of Logitech 2.1's, and now am fondly eyeing a $140 pair of M-Audio AV40's. This is just a dream, right?

(Reading the reviews, the Creative Inspire 2500's appear to be the sub-$100 2.1 setup to get, but they're no longer made, so tracking down a set may be difficult.)

Okay, so everything went well up until the test run. Plugged it all in, installed the processor, turned it on and all I got was cpu cycle lights, a fan that attempted to spin (but didn't) and then no POST screen. After 10 seconds or so, it reboots and does the same thing. After some research, for some reason this particular model has issues with the processor that I chose Intel Celeron Ivy G1610 LGA1155.

This is my first time coming across a processor that matches the board in every way (IVY, Dual Core, LGA1155, Intel Celeron) yet doesn't work with the bios installed on the board.

So I contacted Newegg and they agreed to take the processor back for a full refund and I will purchase a cpu that I KNOW is on the supported cpu list. It's a hell of a lot better than removing the board, putting it in a box... and waiting for a new board.

Of course there is the VERY small chance that the board is bad -- wouldn't that suck ass?? lol

and WALLA -- Ordered a Celeron G540, popped that bitch in there... threw some Artic Silver on it and it fired right up. I had a feeling it was an incompatible processor.

Installed 7 on it this morning, when I get out work tonight... time to play!

Yaaaaaaay!

Don't you just hate the waiting between finding a problem and confirming what the problem is? I've spent quite a few days in bed, sick with worry, because I didn't know how things were going to turn out.

Getting a full 30fps even at full 1080 Blu Ray

XBMC is running smoothly... Right now there appears to be a VERY small audio lag... I'm talking almost insignificant. I believe I can tweak some settings to make it perfect though
