How One Man Accidentally Killed the Oldest Tree Ever

Smithsonian Magazine

Quote:In 1964, Donal Rusk Currey killed the oldest tree ever. To this day, there has still never been an older tree discovered. The tree was a Great Basin bristlecone pine, and Currey didn’t meant to kill it. It was an accident, and one he didn’t really understand the ramifications of until he started counting rings.

Basically, Currey got his tree corer stuck in the tree. So stuck that it wouldn’t come out. An unwitting park ranger helped him by cutting the tree down, to remove the instrument, and later Currey began to count the rings. Eventually, he realized that the tree he had just felled was almost 5,000 years old – the oldest tree ever recorded.

On a more topical note, trees are a cultural and ecological resource that is an important element in the 'humanification' of urban spaces. Would you feel as blase if someone defaced a local mural on a building by spray painting graffiti over it?

I've been to that area. They have a fuck-ton of trees. You would have would have to wreck quite a few before anyone even does more than frown at it. Also I assume the person who took the bark off the tree had no idea it would actually kill it.

I'm no expert but perhaps when it costs £8,000 to replace they should maybe just plant a new one.. you know.. for free..

I actualy approve.

Thing is its probably a 12 year old kid that will get a slap on the wrist and £9,000 down the pan. Big waste.

We have a holly tree in our back yard... It's not well... Keeps losing branches during storms, one guy who climbed it said it should be called a "holey" tree, not a holly, etc. Estimated cost to remove it? About $8,000!!!! Just to cut it down, not removing the stump. It's a big tree (taller than our two story house) and is nestled between our house and two neighbor's homes (which means they have to be careful removing it so it doesn't fall on a house), but these things are expensive.
We're crossing our fingers and saving... But that is probably the shocking price tag.

lol I just remembered that my parents neighbour didn`t want to pay or the removal of a tree and attempted to cut it down himself, it fell onto a a powermast.

In the end his bill included paying the working hours for the men from the electric company who repaired the damage, paying for the hours which people had to spend without electricity and paying for the removal of the tree.
Not sure how much it is but certainly more than having the tree removed in the first place.

Anyway, I am almoust always not amused by vandalism since once your own property was once vandalised by some imature morons that`s how you are.
