Well, having an apprenticeship and educational course doesn't guarantee you a job, but increases the chance of getting a job, indeed.
But most criminals that are in for the offense of dealing in illegal substances, or have committed burglaries and etc. are inside because they were not satisfied with the said work that you can obtain inside a prison.
It's good thinking, of course, but only in the case that the government guarantees them this employment.

But having a higher chance of reintegrating into society is better than having no chance at all.
And statistics show that the main reason for crime is unemployment and lack of education.

Anyway, we are more about crime prevention here by financing projects inhard hit ereas. I am confident in saying that it works since we have low crime rates.

Ever read about that stuff? In America if you go to prison when you are still in your teens you are grade A meat for the older prisoners. They turn you out and sell you for packs of cigarettes. Even make them shave their legs and wear makeup, clean up their cell, grow their hair long, etc.

And if you're white? You're really screwed. I've read of white teenagers getting raped in the police van on the way to prison.

There was this 20 year old kid I read in the local paper last year that got busted with a lot of drugs in his apartment. Got sentenced with 5 different charges, including manufacture and delivery (a potential 99 year sentence). A couple weeks later I was standing outside of my work building and he comes walking up to me and asked me for a cigarette. I recognized his from his mugshot.

So we started talking and this dumb kid was only concerned about his finances. He's like 5'8", slender, kind of a pretty boy.

I'm just thinking, "This dumb kid doesn't even understand what he's facing." He's going to get raped left and right. And HIV is rampant in our prisons.

The prisoners have all kinds of scams for these dumb kids. One good one is to act like you're his buddy and start loaning the kids cigarettes and drugs. Shit like that. Then one day demand he pay up all at once after he owes quite a bit. When the kid can't pay he decides to take payment in flesh from him.

Another one is a prisoner will get some of his buddies to corner the kid, and they all act like they're about to gang rape him. The con will show up just in the nick of time and "rescue" him. So the kid starts to trust him and depend on him for protection. Then the con will demand sex in return for defending him from the other inmates. So the kid thinks, "Well one guy is better than getting gang raped." Then after the con gets bored screwing the kid he'll start pimping him out.

Yes, it seems like it. Here we'd probably have lower crime rates too if not for the drug business that uses Turkey as a means to supply their stuff around Europe.
Though here, it's somewhat of a ....minority problem, as I'm sure its the same in your country, with "Turks" and other immigrants constituting the majority of your prisons. This gives it a slighty different undertone than just education.

The reason they keep the system is pretty simple. Our prison system is privatized, so there is an incentive to make sure the prisoner is treated like complete shit because then they have a higher chance of recidivism. Essentially they are trying to achieve the opposite of what those German prisons are. If they leave more fucked up than when they came in, then there is a good chance that they'll be back in the system, just in a matter of time.

No, but my father worked for the prison system for almost 30 years (he was actually forced to retired early due to privatization, which my father claimed was completely ruining the prison system) and I lived on prison grounds for 18 years.

I'm sure different prisons in different states have differences in how things go down. But I don't think you can compare living on prison grounds to actually being a man in prison.

Texas prisons are especially brutal.

I've read about a hundred stories like this.
