What're you going to get from them?

At least from the writings of astrophysicists and other scientists who write about their fields, you can obtain wonderous knowledge about the universe we live in.

ah... important book... none and as many as you can! Smile
The Feynmann Lectures on Physics pops to mind, for some reason...
Jurassic Park, too... Undecided
And the Silmarillion...

This is an absolutely terrific thread. Not because of the books suggested, but because atheists actually suggest reading books.

No one has ever told someone, 'You should just take atheism on faith.'

Oh god, I love those books so much. This reminded me I need to read them again.... It's been a few years.

Also, read Ragtime. It's not related to science or atheism, it's just a fantastic novel.

I wanted to read them as a kid, but my parents wouldn't let me... It's definitely on my to-read list now!

Researching logical fallacies and philosophy is the best sort of candy for atheism - science books are awesome for understanding what does or could exist and how understanding changes. I agree, what is an atheist going to gain from a book about atheism? Oh, I SUPER don't believe in God now, thanks Dawkins!

What do you mean? Your parents restricted what you read? WTF abuse is this?

Hmm. So called "Atheist" books are really misnomers. Atheism is ultimately, "there's no fucking god...grow up already."

What Hitchins and Dawkins wrote were books about why religion is totally fucking stupid. And I don't think it is possible to get too many books on that subject.[/quote]

Not always, but sometimes, yeah. For years, they wouldn't let me anywhere near the Harry Potter books, either, because someone at church told them that they encouraged kids to practice witchcraft. (To their credit, they finally changed their minds about it and decided that that churchgoer was stupid. Now they love the series as much as I do.)
