What can we do to promote Atheism? How can we unite?

To be honest, I think there's a few organizations out there that have been promoting the idea of atheism fairly well...or at least forms of it. For example, I am a member of both American Atheists and the American Humanist Association, both of which are the most prominent atheist movements in North America. Their donations, however, are slim pickings because of how they are NOT religious organizations that guilt-trip their members into forking over money to keep them running. As a result, they are not nearly as prominent as many religious factions are.

I would suggest looking into both organizations and consider donations or outreach programs. Another way is to seek out local atheists by means of the internet, keep them in contact, meet up with them, encourage them to take a more prominent role. I've been considering doing this myself to see if I can get more people into Humanism so as to start a local charity to assist others who need aid.

SoC, they're a UFO religion. That's basically like saying Scientology is equal to atheism in reason and logic...when in fact reali...realiata...uh...ramalamadad is the exact same thing as Scientology and Christianity and Islam and Judaism; claims without proof and "divine" messengers being gifted to The Chosen Ones(s). It's just another cult, just like the previously mentioned ones.

Some ritual elements would be fun. I suppose you could base a new atheist religious movement on Anton Laveys Satanic Bible. If you could figure out a naturalistic method of attaining immortality, people are going to be in.

Raeliasism, these guys are atheists through to the core as they don't believe in God or in the supernatural of any kind. So you will get the benefits of a religion and the same identical amount of logic and reason you have now as an atheist. You can't go wrong with this.

Raelians are technically still in the atheist camp and importantly they offer the all important immortality, via resurrection tech of advanced aliens known as the Elohim who are 50,000 years more advanced than humanity. They only bring you back if you're good though. This way you can bring people into the atheist fold on mass. And you can still have Jesus, he was an alien/human hybrid his mother being artificially impregnated aboard a spaceship. Perfectly scientific with no supernatural mumbo jumbo, pure atheism.

Does not compute.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

you are suggesting that instead of the unproven bullshit you believe in we should believe in some other unproven bullshit that just happens to not include a god.

Soooo atheism/naturalism has been proven? Well no so what you need to do is make more out of it as a belief by offering people what a religion normally would. And we know that purely scientifically speaking aliens could well exist. I think right there you have a good vehicle to launch atheism from onto the masses, people who normally wouldn't be interested. You have an organised structure and your own religious founder figure, who is of course an atheist himself.

He is on your side here, and you have everything you need to win converts to the cause.

The science does all point to naturalism being true so no need for god.
so you could say that given the current scientific data, yes it has been proven.

Saying something "could" exist and saying that it is "does" are two very different things.

You would have us base our "church" on a lie just to get some organised structure! I'm sorry but I don't roll that way. I require evidence for my beliefs.

Also, I fucking hate churches.

*looks at all the finely tuned natural laws and structure of the universe*

I think there is some room for us to disagree on this one.

You can believe in technological advanced aliens and they contacted the founder of the Raelian movement via their mind communication technology on board their spaceship. As long as it's purely scientific/natural and not supernatural at all you're good to go. There is the problem I think of who created the aliens who created the Earth/ourselves but this is an issue atheists don't seem be phased about in general. A regression of some kind that keeps going back without an end or a starting point, or anything.

Not a lie just a belief, a belief that fits around the belief you already have as an atheist seeing as it is an atheist religion. All you have to do is add in some aliens, and you shouldn't have any problem with their existence as even Richard Dawkins thinks they exist somewhere in space.

Quote:Also, I fucking hate churches.

People in general like them so you'll have to find a way to get them into atheism while retaining everything they like about religion. As the Raelian movement as you can see has achieved. So if you want more than 2% of the worlds population to be atheists then it would have to be something like this. The hope of immorality and seeing your loved ones again and all that business will of course be maintained, the afterlife being on a paradise planet in outer space. Similar to Mormonism in a way.

And the puddle says "look how well I fit this hole, it must have been designed just for me"

The fine tuned laws of the universe are no such thing.

The view that you change one thing and the whole thing falls apart is an idea because it failed to take into account one thing.

If you change any law other laws automatically also have to change.

When you take this into account then the chances of getting a universe suitable for life is...drum roll...... 50/50.

I got this information from reading the latest science of the disc world book which did have references to back it up but is on my kindle lurking somewhere in the house.

Not believing in god does not pre-suppose belief in Raelian bullshit. There may well be aliens in the universe. I think it is very likely. I will hold off belief in aliens until such time as there is evidence that they exist. You see I don't blindly believe things even if there is a good chance that it is true because I demand evidence for what I believe.
Even aliens were proven to exist I think the chances that the Raelians got it right is minimal

Just because people go to churches it does not mean that people like going to churches.
A lot of them will go because they are scared by the local voodoo man, priest or vicar into going because of fear of the big bad god.

They call it being "god fearing" for a reason.

RE: What can we do to promote Atheism? How can we unite?
I hate churches and I go to atheist meetups all the time. I have no need of a church. We just drink and laugh and listen to music with no real clear goal other than to just socialize with one another. There's no devotion, no scripts read, no real order of business. This is what churches would be, stripped of their vestments and trappings and attempts to make themselves seem more grandiose. Utilitarian and egalitarian trumps pomp and circumstance.

Hilarious how atheists are more humble in their social gatherings than Christians are despite all that bullshit about modesty that Christians are supposed to practice.
