The Mars One Project, have you heard about it?

http://www.mars-one.com

"
Humans on Mars in 2023

The Mars One Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that will establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023.
A reliable surface habitat will be set up before the first crew lands; more settlers and cargo will follow every two years.
Our plan is realistic because the technology needed already exists and can be purchased from the private space industry.
The first footprint on Mars will fascinate and inspire generations; it is this public interest that will help finance this human mission to Mars. Join our global effort by sharing our vision with your friends, supporting us and perhaps becoming a Mars astronaut yourself."

According to Mars-one, around 100,000 have applied till now from all over the world.

I have applied myself to see how it goes. Only 4 applicants from my country, Nepal till now including me. Have you applied or thought about it?

The deadline for application is till August 31 with complete profile. So only few weeks left.

P.S They had applicant gatherings in Washington, USA and Darmstadt, Germany recently.

I can see life on Mars initially being a lot or work. Requiring skill, expertise and the right attitude.
So I am out.

Also where would I get regular beer supplies from and I'm sure it will be a while till grapes take sufficiently to make a reasonable pinot.

You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid.

Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis.

Same here. Unless they need somebody to sit and play video games I'm not much use to them.

Basically, supplies will be sent first. And also rovers and robots that will deploy habitats and start producing enough water. And also the food will be grown inhouse in large green houses. Supplies will be sent every two years along with 4 other astronauts.

Here is a good roadmap you can look into:

It's a very small crew they're sending for the first year. 4 astronauts only. That sounds dangerous, I'm thinking 1 doctor, 1 engineer? That's very little. What about reproduction? Have they taken into account astronauts may have babies? How does law enforcement work up there with so few people?

Edit: I think the first 5 crews they'll be sending very qualified specialists only.

Yes there are risks, but that won't stop people I guess. Reproduction is not allowed at least till a sufficient base is done and new crews come in. Of course these people will not do anthing stupid, since w're selecting the best ones (hopefully lol). Laws wont work, since Mars is a completely new planet. So there are very few laws regarding space till now. Not sure about the future though.

Yes, they will be sending the best of the best specialists surely Big Grin

Another concern I have is that it isn't self sustaining, like the living supplies are sent from earth. And there isn't a strategy of getting back if things don't work out, so no money set aside for that. But what if something happens and they cannot afford to send living supplies anymore? Then we have a band of people stranded on mars.

Lol, I think it's becoming very clear that I'm not made for colonization. But I'd love to be a scientist on mars, that'd be cool.

Edit: I would sign up for a generation ship kind of thing though. Because there'd be a more assembled crew of hopefully a few hundred people and it'd be self-sustaining.

Are philandering husbands who dabble as gigolos considered a specialty?

It will be made self sustaining. With hydroponics, aquaponics etc. Greenhouse farming with large biodomes. But, as you say, there is still the risk if something happens, or the MO cannot fund anymore. Well, its a risk that one has to take, to colonize any new area or world. So, I guess you let the colonists do their part, then move once everything is settled. Lets meet there someday Wink Love the idea.

Yes, anyone can apply. You should try it out Wink. No matter what background you have, or what your qualifications are. I don't myself think I'm any where a good astronaut candidate, but I believe just being a part of it will make me happy and special. Thats the whole reason I applied. Wink
