1.the state of being awake and aware of one's surroundings.

I think it's safe to say that animals have that, and you can test it with external stimuli. If I hold a treat in front of dog, it will wag its tail or have any other number of reactions indicating that it is indeed aware of its surroundings.

I'd say animals have conscousness of babies.
Consciousness to me is when you can think 'I am'.
