1.the state of being awake and aware of one's surroundings.
I think it's safe to say that animals have that, and you can test it with external stimuli. If I hold a treat in front of dog, it will wag its tail or have any other number of reactions indicating that it is indeed aware of its surroundings.
I hate to nitpick, but I think what you mean is you are not consciously aware of your surroundings.
