Rape sentence reverberates across India

Rape sentence reverberates across India
Not sure this is the right place to put this, but....

Quote:New Delhi (CNN) -- Anticipation hung heavier than the sultry air outside the massive court complex Friday afternoon. Here and all across India, people awaited the decision from Courtroom No. 304.
[...]

Prosecutors argued that the men -- Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, Pawan Gupta and Mukesh Singh -- deserved to die for an "extreme act of brutality." The woman's family members have said the same. To them and many others gathered here, nothing less could deliver justice. Nothing else could be an appropriate ending to a case that has gripped India.

People here had waited for this day for nine long months, since December 16, when the woman, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student, went to see "The Life of Pi" with a male friend.

The movie theater is in an upscale mall just a short walk from this court complex. The woman -- Indian law forbids naming rape victims -- and her friend boarded a private bus to make their way home from South Delhi to the suburbs.

The driver and at least five other men, said police, were drunk that night and looking for a joyride. They dragged the woman to the back of the bus and beat up her friend, authorities claim; then they took turns raping her, using an iron rod to violate her as the bus drove around the city for almost an hour. When they had finished, they dumped their victims on the side of the road.

The woman's internal injuries were so severe that some organs had to be removed. Two weeks later, at a hospital in Singapore, she died.

The horrific nature of the crime got to people. It was like a bomb had exploded inside the collective Indian psyche.

[...]
As Khanna announced the sentence, one of the men, Sharma, let out loud cries of anguish.

He and the other three will be executed. That was the judge's decision.

The prosecutors congratulated one another. They had done their job.

The victim's father said, "Justice has been delivered."

Has justice been delivered?
Does India need such harsh punishment?
Will it be enough deterrent for the next guys who think of doing this?

Maybe they'll start to get a grip on their gang rape problem over there.

The death penalty doesn't act as a deterrent. That's been proven in many studies. That's not the point in my opinion. At the time that you've done something so horrible making the victims family feel even a little better is worth more than your garbage of a life. It's called justice.

An article I read the other day about the death penalty in India noted that even though it is imposed frequently it is only rarely carried out.

Many are sentenced but few are hung.

This is probably a political sentence. Years from now when the hubbub has died down the sentences will be commuted.

Nothing is a deterrent with those who have no conscience. If they have it within them to commit acts of extreme violence, they are going to do so without a care for the consequences.

You'd have to ask the rape victims about that.

Most abuse and violence against women is domestic - hence not reported to authorities. Let alone trialed.

It`s a disfunction within a culture and not the a problem with the nations laws. We dont have the death penalty for rape, but we have a lower rate in the crime statistics because we left the days behind in which women were considered to not be worth alot.

Death in itself is not a harsh punishment. I state that such people who make the streets unsafe for generic citizens be publicly executed by hanging. Today, we have modern methods to efficiently root out rapists if the victim goes to the police shortly after the crime occured, so rapists today do not have such an easy time. And when they are discovered, tried, and found to be guilty, the only punishment for it will be death.
Public, humiliating death.
