What's everyone up to right now?
RE: What's everyone up to right now?
Is that your heritage? Why the interest?

Do they really have Kentucky Fried Penguin over there?

There's a slight chance I might move there, although it's more likely I'd keep home base in Canada and just travel more.  It's definitely in the top three of "places I want to visit relatively soon."  The other two are the northwestern US for August 21, 2017 (solar eclipse!  w0ot!) and, for reasons even I don't yet understand, Chicago (I sense there's something or someone in the music scene there that I need to hear).

Initially I developed an interest in the language because it dovetails nicely with my interest in pre-Christian Scandinavian culture (Modern Icelandic and Old Norse are very close).  I am Norwegian on my mom's side. but Iceland was originally settled by Norwegians about 1200 years ago.  When I was in elementary school, I also vaguely remember someone saying that we were related to Erik the Red and Leif Erikson, but I don't know if that's true.

Not unless someone imported one and roasted it in the flames of Eyjafjallajökull with 11 secret herbs and spices.   Tongue

Icelandair sponsors some big music festival up there in RVK (or maybe it's in Seattle. KEXP.org co-sponsors it). Chicago, I dunno. I listen to a mix of old jazz, drone and indie. What do you like that Chicago might have?

I've been taking classes at the local Scandinavian Centre since last fall.  Sometime in the next few years I want to make a trip to Iceland, but before I go I want to be able to hold up my end of a conversation.  Gotten past the deer-in-the-headlights stage and actually remembered a bit of the grammar from last term.

I believe Faroese is very close to Icelandic, only with very different pronunciation. So, here's something to mess with yours Smile

The natives will take one listen at your accent and start speaking English at you. My brother was stymied from learning Dutch for this very reason.

That's just simply not true.
