Planted firmly in a pile of manure, American politicians are still expected to smell of roses. It's unrealistic and a sick consequence of our Puritanical heritage. In the end, we seem to admire not those who are honest about their indiscretions, but those who can convincingly fool others that they never happened.

The problem then is when any skeletons in the closet become exposed, regardless of size or number, then suddenly that politician is a hypocrite, a liar. It's a vicious, damaging circle.

So yeah...this kind of publicity would likely ruin a candidate here.

In fact we know for certain that it will. People tend to forget that Barack Obama had a very helpful kick into the Senate on the back of his opponent's sex scandal where he took his wife to a sex club in New York. His fucking wife. This was a man who gave up a high paying broker job to teach children in the inner city, but he was brought down because a journalist unsealed divorce records. It's pitiful the unrealistic moral standard we hold our politicians to.

Thanks for adding to my point. As mentioned before, they didn't even have sex at this sex club.

On a related subject, the newspapers here made a bit of a fuss when it was revealed that UK politicians were found to be accessing porn sites "hundreds of times a day" What the papers didn't say was that someones PC was infected with malware that automatically tried to connect to the sites faster than any human could type, this was blocked by the filters on the IT system.

A state parlament candidate for the liberterian party was recently found to be a member of a online BDSM community together with his wife. The biggest tabloid in the country printed a story on it, with the details on what could be read on his profile.





When he was confronted with this he simply replied that this is private buisness and that he would delete the account.
To my suprise most of the reactions from the public were not such of condemnation but of aproval of the mans possition and his right to privacy.
I agree that he has a right to privacy concerning his sexuality and am happy to live in a society in which cheap shot at his image through those revelations by tabloids are disregarded and seen through as rubbish by the majority of the population.

I bet something like this would have ruined an Amercian or UK representatives political career.

Well, I wonder why the public didn't act in this manner when confronted with Clinton and his sex scandal, or Berlusconi, they too had a right to privacy.
However in my opinion, a politician must always be at the peak of moral standards, this includes sexual morality. I personally think this would not fly too well with contemporary society, and of course the traditions and culture of the people that he represents. Else all politicians would simply allow themselves to be womanizers and man-hunters as they wished, or pursue whatever kinks and other manner of filthy that today's world presents us with, and claim its their personal life. Well, if you are a man that claims to represent a group of people, you must act accordingly.
