No, the changes in the franchises you've mentioned are monumental compared to the changes in CoD. For god's sake, they're on the third iteration of the frostbite engine while CoD still uses the same one.

I would like to support that statement, but Battlefield in terms of gameplay has not made much change between 3 and 4 aside from vehicles and environment destruction. And, I would have to say these features had origins in Bad Company 2 from what I have seen.

The game engine is an important point, but as for players like me I like to see more development than graphics and performance. Understandably, there are hardware limitations on some features, but there is still "wiggle room" in exchange for everything graphics.

As much I would like to disagree with DVN, He makes a point about Battlefield, but not so much for Assassin's Creed and such!!

Meh, I don't see it. Dunno All these games that I've mentioned are extremely similar in my eyes. They're fun as hell, though, don't get me wrong. Big Grin

I'm a bit disappointed you threw GTA into that list. You can't be serious with that one surely.

The thing with cod, is the engine and gameplay is near enough identical in each iteration.

Battlefield and assassins creed at least try to make some innovations. Having said that, I won't be buying any further AC's precisely because I think the franchise has become stale and it is much of a muchness now. It's not near as bad as the kind of thing call of duty does year on year, but it's getting there.

*edit* also, I'd just like to say I've been watching my friend do some livestreaming, and the multiplayer looks exactly the same as it does in every other cod.

Well with GTA I mean the basic game play formula (which I love). As far as CoD goes...yeah, it's a money maker not some expression of art for the most part. It's just trying to appeal to its' audience...such as myself. Yeah it's basically the same thing but I get suckered into buying it year after year. XD I have fun with it so what's the harm I say. You could say the same with any gaming franchise then if that's the case. My beef specifically with cod, above all other games, is that the level of change from one game to another isn't good enough for a AAA title. GTA and most other franchises like it do genuinely up the ante on every iteration, you can tell there's a lot of work gone into them to make the next game bigger and better than the last. You just don't get that with cod.

(sorry if I'm harping on)

Agree with napo 100% and criticisms in the OP?.

I played the originals (1 & 2) and really enjoyed them. I liked WWII shooters when I was younger and they were the best at they time.

Didn't play any until I bought MW2 (which I've heard is the best of the most recent ones), and I got bored pretty quickly. Naturally it could just be me and that I don't enjoy playing this genre (love halo as an FPS though maybe the comparison is unfair), but it is effectively the exactly same game repackaged in new GFX and a new (mostly Irrelevant) story line. I had no connection with the single player, and I didn't get on with the MP experience mainly I guess because I'm used to other FPS'.

How many COD games are there now? There's no variation in any of them, but then again, I guess people don't like things that are different in a franchise they enjoy playing.

What I find really frustrating is that despite the fact CoD games just repackage themselves, people will still buy it. There's absolutely no incentive put on the developers to try harder to make a more rewarding game because they already know people will give them their money anyway.

I just do not get why they choose to distribute new titles than sell the content as new DLC.

I guess it just makes them more of a profit that way, even though they have to go through the hassle of manufacturing the discs and licensing everything, copyrights and all. I guess a new disc is in more demand than a megabyte or gigabyte of downloadable content that could be sold at a cheaper price but still make massive revenue (being CoD).

That's because the main CoD fanbase is in the 12-15 year old age bracket. It's the parents who buy the game and they're none the wiser.

That's what I'm trying to get at. CoD is always "the same" because the consumers ask for that.
