This is just a weak attempt to push conservative Christianity onto society by scaring people. As you can see it's pretty ineffective because we're not willing to repeal the 1st Amendment just so God will protect us from them hurricanes and evil turrorists. I mean, a lot of conservative Christians might be, but the rest of the population quite likes having a separation of church and state.

Though they'd never admit it, people who claim that God allows those calamities to happen because we don't have forced prayer in school or are allowing gay marriage are in agreement with Fred Phelps and the WBC.

Leo - their God is both a complete fucking idiot and a character of contradiction. You won't understand it. That's not a bad thing.

The "God doesn't intervene because of free will" is just an ad hoc response to the fact that as the overall gullibility of the human race declines, so do the so-called miracles. We are able to understand a lot about our world and critically examine supernatural claims, so Christians are forced to retreat into a free will defense to salvage their beliefs. But as it has been pointed out, the bible clearly shows that god has no problem intervening, leaving the Christian with a heaping pile of cognitive dissonance.

And fuck anyone that says we've lost god's blessings due to removing him from school and government. Hopefully, such superstitious nonsense will disappear when these old-timers start dying off.
Even if the open windows of science at first make us shiver after the cozy indoor warmth of traditional humanizing myths, in the end the fresh air brings vigor, and the great spaces have a splendor of their own - Bertrand Russell

but over the years things have just gotten worse and worse, and i'm at the point where i feel like, even if "god is with me, loves me and is watching over me" ....does he actually do anything to help?

i see so many verses and "motivational pictures" thrown at me talking bout how he feels my suffering, sees my tears etc...but how does any of this affect me and my problems?

i talked to a pastor and he said that "god doesnt directly intervene in our lives because we have free will....but he loves us more than we can ever imagine and only wants the best for us"......wtf?

The Greeks said the gods help those who help themselves. Whether God is real or not, there's no reason not to avail yourself of modern scientific means of treatment.

I do not blame You. I come from a minor depression background and rarely do I hear about major depression cases outside of publicly recognized traumatic events... like 9/11 or a rape. If the OP has actually attempted suicide and every day is exhausting and gloomy then I will surely consider the clinical diagnosis without a doubt.

Right, because in the bible, especially the OT, God intervened quite a bit.

The strange thing about that claim, is that god never seems to remove those blessings from other countries that don't worship him to any greater degree than he does in America. I live in Australia, a nation with secular schools and government, and we don't have any greater problems with natural disasters, terrorism or other assorted violences. It's almost as if the claim is a complete lie!

Sarcasm aside, what I find particularly funny about that claim is just how purpose made it is to appeal to the insular, nationalist, culturally unaware simpletons who would accept such an answer. It relies on the audience having absolutely no knowledge or interest in the affairs of other countries, where the obvious falsehood of such an idea is easily spotted.
