The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson just a few hours after House approval on July 2, 1964. The act outlawed segregation in businesses such as theaters, restaurants, and hotels. It banned discriminatory practices in employment and ended segregation in public places such as swimming pools, libraries, and public schools.

The thing is, I'd rather know up front who the bigots are. In fact, I wish these establishments would discriminate against everyone they hate and that everyone would write a Yelp! review about it so we'd all know where we do and do not want to spend our money.

ETA: No it is not apples and oranges - discrimination is discrimination. All of it is wrong. And yes, that would mean that I would not be able to discriminate some Xtian fool for being Xtian.

Please don't get me wrong: I am pro- everything civil rights. I owned a shop in which, yes, I was absolutely allowed to refuse service, but I never did unless a customer had a bad history there, like stealing or causing fights, both of which happened on several occasions- two involving two different Christians.

And, you realize that there are a lot of different people on this forum, and that the term "atheist" has absolutely nothing to do with political views, right?

Look, We're talking about private businesses here. I respect the small governments where they have signed anti-discrimination laws for private businesses, but I don't necessarily agree. It's not up to us to teach businesses lessons with laws (for the most part), but with our lack of business to their establishments.

Look at it this way: discrimination is dying with the old people in this world, and as it gets tolerated less and less, there will be fewer businesses that thrive if any of their policies are based on discrimination. I, for one, appreciate that these people turned this gay couple away, because now I know where not to do business.

I do feel bad for the couple though. I don't get discriminated against on a regular basis, so I can only empathize with what that must feel like.

I absolutely agree that discrimination is a horrible practice. And I absolutely would love if everyone just got along. But they don't, and the fact is, forcing people not to act bigoted doesn't mean they aren't bigoted.

Maybe my view isn't popular in this matter, but discrimination laws, as applied to private businesses, only sweep matters under the rug. When people stop giving their money to these establishments, that's when the problems will get solved. Unfortunately, most of the world is run on money, not love. I say hit these people where it hurts.
