Workers Fired For Protesting Illegal Pay Scale
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/12/08/l...onditions/

Quote:Rosa’s office claimed Domino’s pays its delivery staff less than minimum wage, and its employees are highly dependent on tips. The 181st Street Domino’s claimed its delivery people were working extended hours inside the restaurant – where they earn no tips – but still being paid less than minimum wage, Rosa’s office said.

Oh, and btw...

Dominos revenue in the 3d quarter was $404 million.

Scumbags.

That appears on it's face to be an abuse of the tipped-worker minimum wage, which I am thankful we do not have in my state. Yet, somehow restaurants and such manage to do just fine. Go figure.

I thought this was pretty standard with any job where you could be tipped. They pay less than minimum wage, expecting people to make it up in tips. That's also why they expect you to tip regardless of how well the waiter and such did, instead of only tipping if they did it perfectly.

I didn't know that was illegal in some places. Fortunately I worked in the kitchen, mainly doing prep work.

The issue here is that the employer is paying the lower tipped wage when the employees are performing significant duties where they aren't earning tips. Imagine if you were waiting tables half the time, and doing prep the other half - for 2.13 an hour.

Yeah, that would be a problem. I only really red the first sentence, to be honest.

No, I'm not. I'd love to hear the "libertarian" solution to how capitalism can somehow fix this problem.

First, you apparently missed the part of the report that indicated the practice was illegal. The dickheads responsible will get theirs. Greedy bastards will always exist, which is why I'm always amused by the faux shock and outrage when one of them is caught. Some owners do it right, think Costco instead of Wal-mart. Punish the transgressors in accordance with the law.

Socialism is not the answer to anything (neither is unfettered capitalism). Controlled economies lead to starvation and ruin, it's been proved several times. Pure capitalism fucks over our most vulnerable.

The solution is the wealth creation inherent in free markets, but this must be tempered by mechanisms (state or private) to ensure everyone's basic needs are met (no, Xbox's and play stations aren't basic needs). I mentioned state or private. I am perhaps one of the few libertarian leaning people that think the state must initiate all safety nets. Although there is a lot of 'in principle' discussions on how to replace state welfare with private charity, I'm not confident we're mature enough to attempt it.
