I have some serious doubts about the accuracy of that story. Not intentionally, but North Korea has a history of manipulating their image.

Shouldn't be doubted. A healthcare system with the intention of health and not for profit is actually easy and not very expensive to pull off, however in the west in a for profit health care system it is not easy and does not result in overall health of a society. Keep in mind that North Korea probably doesn't have high consumption of for profit junk foods as well.

I know, stories that contradict the spoon fed capitalist propaganda just can't be true at all...

That's part of what I meant when I said North Korea is good at manipulating their image.

I remember reading a story from a missionary going to North Korea. One of the things they noticed was that their entire trip was extremely rigid. They had to go where their guide told them to go, they had to do it when they were told to do it and there was little to no deviation from already approved areas. And, of course, the outsiders stayed in the nice hotels and had good food and the streets were all clean with all the people unquestioningly happy. But th writer also said that he had a feeling that, had you left that already approved path and seen what was out there and talked to those people, you'd get a much less rosey picture out of things.

So, I get the feeling they did something similar with the health care people. They came in to look around and they were guided to their best hospital, shown their best patients and given a pre-approved route to follow.... and if they had dared to deviate from that path, they would have seen a much uglier side to the North Korean healthcare system (and, of course, they wouldn't have been able to tell anyone since Kim Jung Un would kill them for that deviation).

What good is having great health care if most of your people are starving?

This seems more like it.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pa...669141.stm

Quote:Based on interviews with aid workers and North Korean defectors, the report says hospitals lack essential equipment and drugs, which forces the sick to treat themselves with medicines bought from markets. Major operations are routinely conducted without anaesthetic, while malnutrition has paved the way for a tuberculosis epidemic.

"North Korea has failed to provide for the most basic health and survival needs of its people," said Catherine Baber, Amnesty International's deputy director for the Asia-Pacific region. "This is especially true of those who are too poor to pay for medical care."

According to the latest World Health Organisation (WHO) figures, North Korea spent just ¢50 (32p) per person a year on healthcare – a tenth as much as Burma.

and this says its all for show.
