I would never have thought you were making this up, the same thing happened near where I lived and the burglers called the police.

Burglary being (often breaking +) entering into another's home and taking the things they worked for.
Course, it could be a plant. Most thieves steal from what they know they can steal from, which is often people they know.

We have a saying in Turkish, "Yavuz hırsız ev sahibini bastırır", meaning "the brave thief arrests the landlord".
That is the only live example I've seen so far.
