I have the same problem. I dedicate a large part of a TB external hard drive to music. Since I have an iPod and it's only 80GB, I simply have to be choosy with what I want on it.
For the time being, I've got a solution: divide my music onto flash drives and SD cards, attach them to a media streamer, and play them on my iPhone 4. No doubt I'll need more flash drives when I actually start converting all my CDs to MP3 files. And, just FYI, my CDs are all in huge wallets (2x2 wallets, many with the little 16-CD pockets) that are in a stack in my room two feet thick, all filled. So, it'll be a huge undertaking.

Uh....not my phone lol. I've had my since I graduated college and it's a dinosaur now.
