They will say it was for people back then.. I will say, it doesnt matter!.. owning another person is wrong.. even a deity would know that.

Because whether it is PC or not we are all slaves to one degree or another. So as slaves we need to know how to respond to slaves and be responsiable for those in whom we are responsiable for.

plus morality is not the standard you believe it to be:

what an evasion drich. We are not slaves. The bible endorses slavery. Why doesn't the bible say that slavery is wrong?

Interesting take, but still a cop out. How do you figure we're all slaves?

Dritch.

That's some pretty impressive tap dancing there.

Too bad you really didn't respond to the actual immorality of: owning another human being as property, being able to beat them (as long as they don't die for a couple of days), sell your daughter into slavery, passing your slaves to your children as inheritance...

Of course, it's because deep down, you know condoning slavery is immoral. You have just sacrificed your humanity in deference to your 'god'. You are forced to defend whatever it says in that book.

We get it.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

What are you all talking about? The Bible is the book on morality.
Quote:Leviticus 25:44-46
New International Version (NIV)
44 “‘Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property. 46 You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life, but you must not rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly.
See? You can't rule over your fellow Israelites ruthlessly, only foreigners. Do I hear "improvement"?
Quote:Exodus 21:20-21
New International Version (NIV)
20 “Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property.
See? The Bible was a pioneering piece of literature on slaves' rights. Sure, they suffered a lot, but this is better than them having no rights. After all, these were barbaric times, we can't expect an omniscient unchanging God to reflect perfect morality all the time, can we? Who are we to question God? /poe

I'm sure there will be a post about how slavery in those days wasn't like the slavery of the US South.

It was a 'kinder, gentler slavery'. More like indentured servitude, which is still immoral.
