What do atheists tell their children

That way I'm not being too blunt but am also not encouraging them to believe in fairy tales.

But you know if they find out you're going to die or leave them in any way they'll cry and get extremely upset. Especially if the thought had just occurred to them. I understand the author not wanting to do that, because you do wonder if there's a point in them getting so upset. But at the same time I don't think heaven is as white a lie as he thinks it is.

I got rather upset and went through kind of a period of grief when I was like 10 or so, not because I had lost anyone in that moment, but because I realized that one day, my loved ones and I will die. I think this is a healthy part of growing up, to go through this phase. You get over it. I didn't believe in heaven before that either, it just didn't hit me until then. I think it might have something to do with the onset of puberty.

Getting upset and coping with grief is part of life. I'd rather them deal with that at that point that telling them we'll meet in heaven only for them to grow up and find out it was bullshit.

But I'm a big believer in being straight with kids. It irked me to no end when adults would sugarcoat or lie about how things truly are.

"now kids, we'd like you to stay down stairs and watch a dvd. You can have crisps and pop but don't come upstairs because daddy will be putting his winkie into mummies hoo hoo OK? Then mummy is going to suck daddies winkie and she doesn't want you to see her do that."
Sometimes, a leeeeettle white lie?

Through victory, my chains are broken."

Why do we need to tell kids what to believe? If you ask the right questions and they figure it out on their own. Good teachers don't give facts and figures, they teach their students to think and figure stuff out themselves.

So, if a kid asks me about bird angel wings in heaven, I just ask the kid "I don't know; what do you think?"

I don't tell him anything about God or religion. If he asks me I'll let him know but until then...
