RE: Store brand beats name brand
I buy a lot of off brand shoes. They make them now to look exactly like the name brand.

I get most of my clothes and shoes from Target.

I love their clothes and shoes. I have a Target addiction.

That's okay so long as you're pronouncing it right. That should be 'Tar-jay" as if in french.

I like Kroger's generic food items. They are typically not much, if any, different from name brands. Their sandwich bread and buns, in particular, are actually superior to national brand breads which sell for twice as much or more.

I never even heard of Aldi until I moved to Kentucky, but that store is 98% generic knock-offs. Some of it is not so great, but a lot of it is perfectly suitable, and their prices are usually a lot lower.

We used to go to a lot of car boot sales when the kids were very young. We always referred to it as "going to harrods" so that if anyone asked them where we bought their clothes they'd say it was from harrods.

Translation please? I realize a car's boot is its trunk but how does that relate to a place to buy things?

Geez, we've barely been gone 300 years and you guys have totally jacked up the language. No respect.

You're own fault for buggering off.

Basically you put all your old stuff in your car, drive to a field where lots of other people have done the same then put it out on tables. Then people come buy your crap. You, in turn, walk around everyone else's old stuff and buy it, thus going home with a car load of different crap.

Things are a bit different over here on the food side of things. Whilst you can buy frozen vegetables there isn't a great range. Generally people go off once a week or more to the local street markets where fresh produce is sold. Its a PITA for things like sprouts - which require trimming and cleaning but for most things the general feeling is that it is a lot better being both healthier and, considerably cheaper than the supermarket.

One aspect I do like about the whole thing is that you tend to eat seasonally - certain vegetables or fruits at certain times of the year. This is something I think we lost in the UK. Can't say its definitely better but it does feel like you are a bit closer to nature somehow.
