Yes, they were. That was precisely the very point of a minimum wage from the start. Employers were previously able to pay slave wages and workers often labored in miserable conditions that forced many to live in slums and basically be corporate serfs.

Quote:Small businesses are often operating on a very narrow profit margin and an increase in the minimum wage could put them out of business. Democrats don't care about people like that or middle income workers who have also been squeezed from both ends with stagnate wages and increased taxes.

I personally think that keeping kids from starving is more important than someone who's well off already making even more money. Certainly, corporate profits continue to set records while real wages continue to decrease.

It wasn't my claim. I was just using the language he used.

Even if a person makes above the minimum wage, most jobs don't pay enough for said person to enjoy even the most basic of leisure activities. If someone is willing to work 50-60 hours a week, they should have enough money so as not to worry about getting sick and going bankrupt or having their car break down and being unable to pay for it (which then leaves them without a means of getting to work). The reason a lot of people are on welfare is because jobs like Walmart don't pay shit. And $10 an hour still isn't shit.

Well, I haven't been around much lately, largely because I have a new job, better than the soul crushing job I had before. There is a kind of irony to the new job, though. See, does everyone know that there are lots of regional cell phone companies out there? Well, I'm going to be doin customer service for on of them. The ironic part is that the region that this company covers is extremely conservative. I wonder how the people of Mississippi will feel to know that the person who's helping them with their cell phone service is a transsexual atheist?
I live on facebook. Come see me there. http://www.facebook.com/tara.rizzatto

As long as you do a good job I'm sure they'll be happy.
