I had a college philosophy class that was taught by an 80 year old man in a rocking chair. I thought I was going to rot away myself.

I still remember - and not fondly - the Ethics prof. His most common words...delivered in a stunning monotone worthy of any jackoff preacher... were "you know," "you see," and "in other words." I once counted 107 "you knows" in a 50 minute class.

The guy sucked.

I took a class on James Joyce years ago. Until then, the most ambitious novel I'd read was David Copperfield. All was well until we got several chapters into Ulysses, at which point I felt like I'd been thrown into the deep end of a pool with an anchor around my neck. I got through it but leaned heavily on secondary sources to ease the way.

No regrets. It was a great experience.

Structures was pretty hard, but only insofar as you had to apply yourself and get the work done. The math wasn't hard at all, it was understanding the direction of forces that was hard-ish. The lab portion where we modeled loaded beams was the hardest part about it, but mostly because the modeling program didn't make sense. Everything else about that class was fun. We got to build stuff, then stack shit on the thing we built and watch it get destroyed. Awesome.

I don't know that I could say. Only one class gave me exam anxiety, and that was linear algebra. I got out of the final for that class, my legs started to buckle and go limp, and I had an overpowering urge to throw up. But other than that, I was fine. The material was hard, but not especially hard compared to other classes. The only other real outstanding difficulty I had (ignoring year 2 of French, because I didn't study enough), was a class in operating systems design. The first test, I probably didn't get more than half way through the questions. The test focused on critical sections, multitasking, and deadlock avoidance. Given how much of the test I didn't complete, I thought I was a goner. But come next week it was revealed that everybody had a massively hard time with that test, so I didn't feel so bad. I think I passed that class with an A, which is about par for me. I typically pull a B+ / A- average, mainly because I'm lazy and don't study enough.

At Cal I took Intellectual History from Martin Jay I think his name was. I liked a lot of it but I just couldn't take Marxism seriously and there was so much of it. For the final we were told to bring two blue books to write two essays in two hours. We were given a page of about 20 questions from which two would be chosen. So it took a good amount of time to rough out a plan for each eventuality. Fortunately there wasn't a Marxism question on it but there was a Heidegger one. And though I took an upper division course on the guy the same quarter I'd be lying if I thought I had the skinny on that guy. So I filled out both blue books in the two hours. My hand was so numb by the end of it. Got an A- on the final and for the course. Meh. Had the feeling I'd have to either be a lot better at pandering to the prof or a lot smarter to do any better.

In Florida, you have a certain amount of credit hours with required writing!

Some Math courses can full fill the requirement!

I had to write a history paper (felt like a book) for the professor. He graded the papers harsher than all of my English professors!

I hated writing that novel!

My driving lessons+exam (in germany), esp. the practical exam. I was never so scared of an exam again to this day, and that includes my phd defense. Although thermodynamics+statistics was pretty horrible...
