PHOENIX (The Borowitz Report)—Arizona Governor Jan Brewer said today that she was reluctant to sign an anti-gay “religious freedom” bill passed by the Arizona state legislature this week, telling reporters, “I believe that bigotry and hatred should be free of government regulation.”

Arizona state Sen. Steve Pierce, a Republican, voted for the okay-to-discriminate bill awaiting action by Gov. Jan Brewer. But—talk about buyer's remorse—he now hopes Brewer will veto the bill:

Right around the same time the Legislature as a whole was voting in favor of adding gays to the list of people who can be legally discriminated against in Arizona, the Republicans in the state Senate's education committee voted 6-3 (surprise, a party line vote) to eliminate Common Core standards in the state's secondary educational system.

Now, why would anyone want to not take part in what amounts to target goals of what students should be able to do in math and language arts? Take it away, GOP Senator Al Melvin!

“It got hijacked by Washington, by the federal government,” said Melvin, a candidate for governor, and “as a conservative Reagan Republican I’m suspect about the U.S. Department of Education in general, but also any standards that are coming out of that department.”

So, it's not any argument against the actual standards. But since Reagan talked about getting rid of the Department of Ed, they obviously can't do anything right, ever.

Oh, but don't worry, it gets better (emphasis is mine):

David Bradley, D-Tucson, to ask him whether he’s actually read the Common Core standards, which have been adopted by 45 states.

“I’ve been exposed to them,” Melvin responded.

Pressed by Bradley for specifics, Melvin said he understands “some of the reading material is borderline pornographic.” And he said the program uses “fuzzy math,” substituting letters for numbers in some examples.

Congratulations, Pythagoras! That theorem you came up with to determine the lengths of the sides of a right triangle? It's fuzzy in Arizona, because a, b and c cannot ever be used in math. But on the bright side, the other 49 states are still cool with it. For the moment.
