I have a few questions to atheists, before I become one.

RE: I have a few questions to atheists, before I become one.
I just recently stepped off the religious boat, and while it wasn't easy, it was the best thing I could do for myself. I'm still in the process of figuring out exactly what I believe (or don't), but I am at peace knowing that the god of the christian bible, and any other religion, does not exist. The more time I spend learning though, the more I'm convinced that there isn't any supreme being out there.

Don't let the stress and anxiety over the unknown affect your life. It's not worth ruining your mental (and physical) health over. Write two lists... One for why you believe in a god, and the other, reasons for NOT believing. You might find that one of the only reasons you believe, is because of fear of punishment. Keep adding to your lists as soon as new stuff comes up. I've found this to be helpful in my own life. Anyway, just a suggestion.

Haha thanks a lot, as I mentioned above I'm trying to get better at it, since it's kind of a passion. Big Grin

A lot (probably most) people here are what we call a "6". We don't claim to know for sure that gods doesn't exist. We simply don't accept the arguments that they do. The burden of proof is on those who make the claim that gods do exist, and they have failed to meet that burden. I can't very well prove that leprechauns or fairies definitely don't exist, but I've quite fucking positive they don't. Same with gods.

As for being afraid all the time: I'm still kinda going through that. I've been an atheist for under two months, and so I'm trying to undo all the fear and indoctrination that has been drilled into my brain since I was little. I imagine it'll just take some more time.

Welcome aboard!

Your posted religious view. 'Not sure for now' is a perfectly viable position to have. Most atheists do not claim to know, with absolute certainty, that a god does not exist.

And as others have said, you can't really plan to be an atheist. Either you accept the proposition that a god exists to be true, or you don't.

You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

Thanks mate! As for my religious view I'm pretty confused, since it is now that I start to wake up and see what reality really is, not like how the religions explains it. So for now "Not sure for now" works pretty well for me. Big Grin

I don't mind at all. Smile My mother language is Bulgarian, which is pretty similar to Russian.

Hm... Something bothers me about this sentiment but I can't put my finger on it.

Learning is good! Learn about god beliefs, learn about other religions, learn about your OCD rituals and what triggers your anxiety, learn about science and art and culture and everything!

Whether you become an atheist as a result of your studies is almost beside the point, in the same way that debunking the existence of Big Foot or the Loch Ness monster when you study biology is beside the point. It may happen, it may not happen, but you'll certainly be better informed than you were before.
Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.

You see, same goes with the rituals - until I don't do them, I start getting anxious. It's awesome that I am more than ever interested in learning what surrounds me, but when it just servers to reduce my anxious for a while, comes the problem.

Glad to hear it, most of the people I meet in forums, games, chat rooms have no idea what Bulgaria is and where it is. Big Grin
