My New Tool

RE: My New Tool
Custom built light weight AR.

Custom built AR pistol. I recently picked up an adjustable gas block for this one. Once I get it installed and running I’m probably going to pay the $200 to register it as an SBR.

Acceriorized S&W15.

24" heavy barrel custom AR sitting behind my Remington 700 308.

DPMS LR-308 I picked up a while back. It still needs optics and BUIS plus I will be replacing the trigger before it goes to the range.

Nice stuff Popeye. What trigger did you have in mind for the LR? I recommend the Geissele high speed match trigger. It breaks like glass.

That's a Geissele SD-C in the first one. I'll probably run the the same thing in the 308.

I don't have an AR-15 (or anything similar) but I do keep one of these in my quick release safe.

Nice GP-100 Cinjin. A Ruger Security-Six 357 was (and still is) my first handgun. Since then I’ve added this SP-101 to my collection.

Got a few 9’s too. This CZ-75 Phantom is my best shooting handgun. Hard to find holsters for though.

But I remain a fanboy of the 1911.

This thread makes me want to go buy a gun. I imagine I should take a class first on how to properly handle a gun.
What steps should I take? My experience is very low.

It may seem like I know nothing about this from my next sentence after this, but I definitely know the first step should be that one you imagine you should take.

Not sure about what follows because I have never actually tried to buy a gun and have never had any interest in what it would take in order for that to happen.

A safety class is definitely a good idea. See if you can find a range with rentals that offers a safety/beginning shooters class. After that shoot several different guns. Find one that fits and points naturally for you. Other than that get a 22 for your first gun. They are a lot cheaper to shoot than anything else. Then practice, practice, practice...

RE: My New Tool
If you can stomach it take an NRA safety class. It may be a very long day, and you probably won't have much in common with the others beyond an interest in firearms; but it can really teach you the basics of firearm safety, how to fire a rifle etc.

I'm glad to know other atheists own guns! I was starting to think I was the only one (silly obviously lol). I don't have a rifle (my one partner does have an AK though), but I carry a Glock 30 with me when I go into the bad parts of the city. A concealed carry class is also a good idea if someone has interest in firearms. It'll really get you comfortable with pistols in particular.

My father taught me how to handle a firearm as a child. I can say for sure that this sounds like a very good way for an adult to go about it:

However, there's a real catch to this next pointer:
Quote: Other than that get a 22 for your first gun. They are a lot cheaper to shoot than anything else. Then practice, practice, practice...

Although normally I would agree with this 99 out of 100 times, there is a wee problem. It's nearly impossible to find and purchase 22 cal. rounds right now. There's a major shortage of bullets and even if you can find some, it won't be many and they won't last long. You could find yourself with a brand new 22 rifle/pistol and no ammo to shoot. There's been a shortage (to say the least) for over 8 months now and no one seems to know when it's going to end.

At any rate, if 22 rounds do become available than yes, popeye's advice is good - but if you want to get into shooting sooner than later, you may be better off going with something in a 9mm. (Even though that is quickly disappearing too)
