That's an average, and is dependent on a lot of different factors. In the USA the claim used to be that the difference was up to $1 million over the course of a person's working life. But given that so many of today's college graduates start their working life in five or six-figure debt, that number is probably not as high anymore.

I get the impression that a college education is still highly sought after in the USA, for no other reason than that you "must" get one. It has become an end unto itself for many people (witness the number of successful and highly-paid athletes who make it a point to complete a degree that they are almost guaranteed not to use) and therefore planning beyond it is almost nonexistent. Entering into $20,000 to $200,000 of debt before you even begin a career is not something that should be done as lightly as it seems to be here.
"Well, evolution is a theory. It is also a fact. And facts and theories are different things, not rungs in a hierarchy of increasing certainty. Facts are the world's data. Theories are structures of ideas that explain and interpret facts. Facts don't go away when scientists debate rival theories to explain them. Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

I think in a lot of ways a degree has become a prerequisite for simply getting a job, whether your degree is applicable to that job or not. Some professions flat out require a degree in their field to even be considered for an interview (Lawyers, architects, the sciences, etc.). The college degree has become the new high school diploma.

So it's entirely dependent on what you want to do.
Teenaged X-Files obsession + Bermuda Triangle episode + Self-led school research project = Atheist.
