"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Squeeee. Musicals, my favorite thing.

I could do this all day, but I'll limit myself to three. OK, Four.

In forth place, Forever autumn from Jeff Waynes War of the worlds. I'm going to claim this a musical on the basis that they made it into an arena show. I had this on a crackly LP when I was a kid and spent hours listening to this and thunder child. Then the deal was sealed when somebody had it played at a funeral. I barely knew them and I was bawling like a baby.

In third, My favorite musical is chess. I love the depth of the characters, the ambiguity of the moral positions, and the twisty turny plot, which twists and turns like a twisty turny thing.

To appreciate this one has to appreciate the character. Freddie Trumper, the American, "based on the real life character Bobby Fischer" has spent the whole show to this point (near the end) as an abrasive, arrogant and petulant jerk. Then they throw this in the end and you get the sudden and profound insight into the guy's inner turmoil and the reasons he's so damaged. Its like a bucket of water to the face and you suddenly find yourself empathizing with him. Its amazing.

Its tiresomely predictable, but I have to pick one from Jesus Christ Superstar
And finally, its tiresomely predictable, but I have to pick one from Jesus Christ Superstar. There are a few great tracks in this musical if you can suspend any instinctual distaste. My favorite is the trial before Pilate. He makes the character of pilate relatable, taking you through the characters journey, trying to do what he thinks is the right thing before finally caving to pressure. I get a real chill from the energy of the mob and the Pilates desperation. Its relatable for all those times when we know the right thing to do, but we have to do the expedient thing instead. This version is a bit full on but its my fave.

I agonized over this one for ages. Almost anything from les mis is epic. But if I was going to pick one song I'd go with the Confrontation. I love the overlaying vocals and the way they represent the conflicting world views vieing for dominance. Note how from about 0.50 Javert is definitely the dominant vocal and Val jean has an almost pleading tone. Then at 1.15 something snaps and the energy just bursts out and you get a sense of the depth of energy and will inside val jean. Then at 1.25 he changes again and becomes cold and deadly. You get to see the whole gambit of emotion that val jean goes through from nothing more than the tone of his singing. Brilliant.

Great thread. I had great fun choosing.

Trey Parker made this movie and starred in it, right before South Park got popular...

When I was young, there was a god with infinite power protecting me. Is there anyone else who felt that way? And was sure about it? but the first time I fell in love, I was thrown down - or maybe I broke free - and I bade farewell to God and became human. Now I don't have God's protection, and I walk on the ground without wings, but I don't regret this hardship. I want to live as a person. -Arina Tanemura
